As a pitcher I got hit square in the face in high school...momentum carries you forward after the pitch...its a safety issue.

You can't be this dumb. They are in no way soft.

They are pitching at what? In the 60s MPH right? Its bigger than a baseball.. And getting hit with it at 43 ft (I think its 43 ft right? If not its close)... Would you be willing to take that hit?

My daughter is a college pitcher and she wears a mask. I couldn’t imagine her pitching without it. I have t seen many college fielders wear them. I definitely don’t have a problem with younger girls wearing them on the corners.
I definitely wear one when she pitches to me. lol damn rise balls suck to catch.

Those who read this board are not playing at a high school level. But you have a chance to get a personal experience. Become an umpire, go through a season in girls 16 and up or high school. Come back and describe it after doing it for one year.

It’s 45 feet. Once you release the ball you’re looking at 38-40 feet, momentum carrying you forward straight toward home plate. At 60 mph to the batter, then off the bat at another 65-70 mph, it gets back quickly. As a former pitcher, I’ve taken hits square to the legs. The knee hits off the bats are the worst. I was lucky to avoid the face hits.

I pitched a little bit in rec league softball, and was definitely aware that I was a big target.

My daughters were required to wear a mask even when playing outfield. I asked why aren’t the boys required to since half of them still can’t catch at 8 years old and they all get black eyes and cuts on their faces from getting hit. The answer I was given was it was ok for boys to have scars but the girls will need their faces one day. Not even making that up.

John olerud wore a helmet playing first base 30 years ago
John had brain surgery in college, and wore the helmet afterwards to protect the surgical area on his head.
He didn’t have to wear it in the pros, but continued out of habit and superstition.

Maybe because they stand 10 ft from the batter?
Women are definitely known for scorching comebackers. Some of them can even hit the ball a whopping 125 feet for a home run in their McBallparks

Softball pitchers throw from a distance of 45 feet
Women's fastpitch softball rubber is 43 feet from home plate. By the time the pitcher releases the ball, she is usually between 35-43
feet from home.
Before 2010, the pitching distance used to be 40 feet.
