Anything that involves that much internal rotation needs to be accompanied by mobility exercises, backstroke, etc.

There are alot of swim coaches who need a good bit of training from a strength and conditioning perspective rather than just knowing how to build workouts , develop strokes and give intervals.

My daughter loves swim team and we're happy to support anything she needs...but we thought we were done, then she made the state cut at the very last meet of the season. The wife and I were like frick!

better hire a flip turn coach as well. little timmy will never get that college scholarship without him

Don’t laugh, but back in like 1990 I went to a week long swim camp that just focused on starts and turns. It was run by the Princeton coach at the time. Princeton had won the 200M free relay at NCAA’s something like 3 years in a row based of having the best relay starts and turns.

Braxtyn only swims after practice and never on game days.

Curious to know if you took up triathlons and such? Kind of a natural transition for high level swimmers bc you can dominate in the water and slightly suck on the other two parts and still have a great time.

My wife did distance swimming in high school and a few years back decided to try a few sprint triathlons. She hadn't competitively swam in years but it was pretty wild to watch her post a top 2 or 3 swim time, then end up like 20th because her bike and run were so bad

If you had to pick one of the three sports to be good at to compete in triathlon, swimming would be the worst.

Even for s super sprint, the time in the water is just such a short amount of time when looking at the overall time. Now, to truly be competitive you do need to be a good swimmer (or just an off the charts cyclist or runner) but most people can compete in their age group just being adequate in the water.

Running is different...you can barely survive the swim but if you're a college cross country runner, chances are you're doing to do pretty well.

Keep it fun. One of my kids swam in college and left the team after 2 years. At that level it is brutal on the body and mentally. Just like any sport at that level, it's like a full time job. It was much less expensive than other travel sports and the travel was minimal except for the higher level meets. I loved watching it though and didn't mind the meets even though they are LONG bc they aren't every weekend like other sports. We parents had a great time at the state meets. But, by far my favorite was the high school meets! The most expensive thing before they got to college was the dang competition suits that only last for one big meet if you are lucky. Club fees were not bad considering they were there twice a day every day almost except for Sundays.

For the most part, yes. Once a stroke is developed it isn't going anywhere. Sure, with time off you'll lose some of the technique but the overall stroke is what it is and if the correct habits were developed they will still be there.

Now, fitness on the other hand is a different story. That begins to wither away after a couple weeks off.

Me and your wife are same. I’d dominate the swim for women and men, then I’d eat their dust on the bike and run. Still would wind up in the top 10% or so. I enjoyed it because it was the only thing that came close to competitive swimming. But then I did one mid summer in LA heat….ended up being my last one. It was disgustingly hard in the elements and then I didn’t like them so much anymore. Plus I didn’t have the time or money to dedicate to that sport.

I got back in the water after baby #4 a couple months ago. Did a 3600 yard in an hour which I felt proud of. I felt awesome the rest of the day but I really can’t swim more than once a week and meet my fitness goals; not the way I like to swim, anyway. And my stroke is just as good if not a little better now, tbh. The strength I gained in my shoulders, core, legs from the strength training with heavy weights made a huge difference. My pattern/bi lateral breathing is crap now, though. I was a flip turn queen. One Bennie of being short and compact (and did cheer/back handsprings) as a swimmer was my flip turns were great bursts of power that helped me win close ones on shorter relays and such.

Yikes. What a tough end to a great swimming career.

I grew up in the water and went on to do triathlons/ironman however I am a slow and steady swimmer, not a racer. I think its such a skill to have and intend to put my kids on a recreational swim team.

Being a strong swimmer has saved me in a lot of situations. I wish every kid had the opportunity to learn how to swim, and had access to water.

Lance Armstrong used to dominate any tri he entered because he was a competitive swimmer in high school and then would just blow the doors off everyone on the bike (yeah ill just hold 320w and see how it goes). Of course the a-hole would still rip off low 6 miles after all that. Shame he never really wanted to get serious with it.

He did. He tried to make a comeback in triathlon and did pretty well as a pro after his cycling career was done but USADA stepped in and enforced his lifetime ban ending his comeback.

He's just a freak, elite athlete athlete. Even as a teen he could swim with the best, ride better than everyone and hang on the run. Had he chosen to pursue triathlon over cycling, no doubt he could have been a mutliple time world champion.

Sounds miserable for you and your kid. But it’s the first swim team brag I’ve ever seen here so I approve.

Try travel hockey for cost shock.... all the coaching costs plus a cpl thousand in equipment then if little johnny is a goal equipment costs times 5.
For the ultimate cost a kid can get into try equestrian sports .... add in horse costs. Stupid money
