Cat 4 or lower, most homeowners are on the hook for a percentage. If a Cat 4 storm is subsequently re-evaluated as a 5, but that reclassification happens after the "window" for claims, homeowners are not refunded for their deductibles.

My brother just told me when we were in Tampa for the Packer game that they're liable for 2%. Not sure if that's universal or just his policy, but he's a realtor so he would know. Also, the storm then took the hard right, eyewall went right over his house, and fricked his business for the forseeable future.

Said the thing to remember is that the number is not as high as you would expect because so much of the sales price of homes is in the dirt. So even a place that goes for $1MM, the house getting wiped away will only be a portion of that $1MM to build back.

A lot of the companies you see that were writing in Louisiana were based out of Florida

You are correct. This is going to cause a catastrophic insurance situation in Louisiana as even more carriers who were solvent will be completely underwater. Citizens in both states are going to need a massive cash infusion by tax payers by the end of the year.

2% of the insured amount is the standard Hurricane deductible in Florida

Look like a lot of those structures held up remarkably well so far.

2% is pretty common, typically you get a choice depending on company. The higher percentage storm deductible you take the lower premium obviously because you have to come more out of pocket (1%, 2%,3%, 5%). Keep in line most loans will say you cant' carry any higher than 5% on a wind/hail-named storm-hurricane deductible

Also, keep in mind that a wind/hail deductible a Hurricane Deductible, and a named storm deductible are not the same thing

Pre-Ida some companies would even let you take flat $1000 deductibles or flat $2500 deductibles. Now in south Louisiana if you get get a 2% deductible you are lucky

Must be some very different realtors in Florida than in Louisiana...Although a lot of them will pretend to know a lot lol

That is correct, it will have consequences here. The ripples of Major catastrophic insurance events will be felt in every state that company writes insurance with whether that be through insolvency of the company or an increase in premium

It's amazing to think about just how big and strong that weather system is.

He's been doing it for about 20 years full time down there, so he definitely knows his stuff. If his house survived this it's basically invincible to hurricanes. No one in their neighborhood has a webcam in their place that they know of though, so no idea.

What's more amazing is that there are people who really think humans can control the weather.
