If I’m in a safe place with enough rations, is it not a fine idea to stick it out at home?

Surrounded by nothing is not ideal. A friend of ours stayed uptown through Katrina and relied on his boyscout skills: burying his poop in his backyard being the least of his worries. Fortunately there was a multistory condo nearby, and the water in its pipes was enough to keep he and several others with enough to sponge bathe them, to keep the pot of defrosted meat going (a gas stove still worked somehow), and kept him somewhat clean.
He hasn't been the same mentally after spending the storm in his attic replacing shingles as they blew off.
Then biking out to see where the water in the city had risen to.
But everybody makes their own decisions. Just don't plan on anyone answering if the cell phone towers are flattened and don't have power, anyway.

This. Katrina weakened to a 3 at landfall but still had a cat 5 surge of 20-25 feet
Yep! And the geography plays a huge role as well.
A direct hit or scrape on Tampa Bay would be devastating.
It's like a NE punch to Vermillion Bay that Lili almost gave us.

Also that is southwesterly shear which will erode the back end of the storm.
The NE quadrant will still pack a hell of a punch and with it being so close to land before weakening, I wouldn’t take any comfort in the expected weakening if you’re in the path. The NE eyewall will still be strong

She said 275 is already a parking lot. They're trying to convince her brother, wife and baby to come over to there house since they at least have a generator, they're in downtown Tampa.
I'm trying to convince them all to leave

Actually 30+ in Waveland. This setups very similar to Katrina with reduced intensity at landfall and expanding wind field. Not familiar with coastal shelf in Tampa St. Pete area but coastal Mississippi is so shallow it makes for worst case with regards to suurge God bless those in Ian's path. Just get out!

you in house or apartment/condo building?

At what point are you likely stuck where you are, Wednesday night?
That opportunity may have already passed. I know someone in Tampa, has reservations in Orlando to evacuate. But said the interstate is already a parking lot, and you run the chance of getting stuck and running out of gas while stuck already. It's a terrible situation to be in right now.

GFS rainfall totals. Over 50" in some places.

Delta finally issued travel waivers for Sept 25-30, but my flight is Oct 1. I'm a bit surprised those are still on. Go to believe even south Florida is going to lose power for a couple of days.

50 inches of rain doesn’t even seem possible

I'm always amazed at how stupid people are when it comes to hurricanes. They think it's brave to stay and risk dying. So what, then they can tell their hurricane war stories to randoms? Get the hell out if you can, especially if you have kids. Don't put them through unnecessary shite.
I’ve seen enough to realize this notion that you’re gonna stay back and watch over things, is all but completely pointless.
Your place is either gonna get wiped out or nothing happens and you’ll be able to get back to it eventually.
There’s essentially nothing, staying back to watch over things would ever make anything different either way.

I have a buddy who lives 3rd floor condo right by the bridge from St Pete to Tampa. Says he’s staying.

That’s what I’m thinking.
I have friends who WILL need help too.
It’s also a straight shot up my street uphill to 275. So I’m fairly sure I will have the ability to leave after the storm if it comes to that.

Yeah it’s now a game of inches (+/-20 miles). Someone is going to get wiped out.
This 100%. My mothers home was in the western eye wall of Laura….20 miles west of that there was absolutely no damage. Her area was destroyed. Those last minute wobbles can make a huge difference.
