You’re upset that they used a vague term so you couldn’t confirm to yourself that you’re superior? If it’s so crucial to you to size up a stranger, just follow up with questions about their title/company/etc. A person of your professional stature surely possesses basic communication skills.

Millineals, please translate for me. I’m not understanding why, as an Engineering Director for a large Corp, I should feel so inferior.
First job out of the Navy was for a telecom startup in 2000. I made great money but was absolutely unemployed after 11 months
Working for a startup that has a charasmatic CEO makes you feel like you're disrupting the industry. You feel you are a part of a Rogues gallery of bright young people unwilling to accept the status quo
As you get older, you realize it was all bullshite meant for nothing more than to make the CEO rich.

But what’s wrong with some pride? They’re living the American dream. Taking part in basically a new company, a small business. Taking risk but having the freedom to do so. Almost like a mom and pop shop kind of thing except it’s in software or whatever because that’s where technology is right now.
I’d be proud to be the owner of a new gym (that’s an end goal of my life). Their interest is in tech.

I actually do work for a tech startup.
As for the not making any money...I received a $30k raise from my ad agency job and that's before I make a penny in commission. Plus I work from home, have about a 50 hour work week, my stress levels have been reduced by about 80%, I have stock options, unlimited vacation, great coworkers who believe in what we're building, etc etc.
(But, I'm a man...I'm 40! So I may not be the person you're asking about)

How dare anyone be proud of who they work for or what they work on. Pretty easy to see the allure of a startup. Folks like to know they're making an impact in an organization. You're not getting that working for General Motors, Schwab, Dell, etc. You're just another drop in the bucket.

I've been on both sides of a start up. I've staffed their entire development teams. And now I work internally for a company that competes with them.
Startups, at least here in Austin, UNDOUBTEDLY pay more than your "typical" company. The salary is nuts, the majority of them offer unlimited PTO, and equity in the company can result in a payouts of $50k in 3 years or less. Of course, with that comes the instability and long hours.
I applaud the guys who take risk.

It may be hard for some to believe or understand, but not everyone dreams of working 60-80 hours a week at a plant and spending half their yearly salary on a jacked up truck they don’t need/properly use other than when pulling the rest of their yearly salary (boat) once or twice a year.

If I was young and had the opportunity to work at a startup, I would jump at the opportunity. The chance to get in on the ground floor with stock options is too good to pass up.
As a former IT Director at a large privately owned company, I had stock options and made some serious cash when the company sold, but would have made many millions more if I'd been there from the beginning.
