Seems like the younger generation always says this with such conviction and pride when you meet them. Is this just another way of saying, “I don’t make much money, and will be unemployed in 4 months.” ??

Millineals, please translate for me. I’m not understanding why, as an Engineering Director for a large Corp, I should feel so inferior.

Because they work for a tech startup and you're just an engineering director.

I have never heard this said in any situation other than movies where a disapproving father is meeting his daughter's "new and edgy" boyfriend.

It's a risky job, but a job.

Well, in a progressive city like Austin, this is all you hear and are constantly made to feel inferior if you are part of the corporate rat race.

Because you don't get stock options for pennies that could be worth hundreds in a few years and you don't develop cutting edge technology.

Of course that stock might not be worth anything in a few years either, but it sounds like they have the balls to bet on themselves.

You on the other hand...

I'm not sure why this needs translating. Sure there's risk, but the lure of any start up is the chance the business will get big and you'll be on a fast track to executive level pay and profit sharings.

He might not have to agree with it, but I'd be very concerned if my Engineering Director didn't understand the appeal of a start up. I'd hope he'd have a modicum of business sense.

You sound butthurt. Someone who is supposedly an "Engineering Director for a large Corp" shouldn't be jealous

They have a better chance of becoming the next billionaire than 99.99% of the rest of us. They embody the American dream better than anyone right now.

Which has less than no tech startups. I could see people saying this in Austin San Fran or Seattle

Watch Silicon Valley, it does a pretty good job of explaining it. Essentially all these tech startups think they are going to be the next big world changing thing. So they feel like they are part of something big. For the 99% of them that arent, they'll eventually find a normal developer job somewhere and code some meaningless software until they retire because it pays the bills. When you're young you can be all altruistic, but when it no longer pays the bills, you cant afford to be altruistic

I'm hoping my Nokia stock options do the former and not the latter
