I'd be excited until the salary part came up. Then I'd laugh.

On 40k, it doesn’t matter if there is a 401k. It’s not like you’ll have any money to fund it. On a 40k salary, you’re taking home 24k. Not sure how to live on 2k a month and eat decent food and live in a decent place.

Sounds great, sounds cool. Don't take it. Lots of downside.

My first thought is to suggest you move in with a Candlestick maker.

Turn it down or counter by saying, "It sounds great, but my salary requirement is at least $___. If you can meet that, we have a deal. Otherwise, thank you for considering me."

For 40k? Walk. Good gosh it would be a good gig, but for 40k, many other people view it as good too? Hence the lowball. And jobs with a line behind you to step in will never see large increases in salary or benefits. Cooperstown, NY isn’t New York City, but it’s still New York.

Remember, you aren’t living on 40k. You are living on 40k minus just under 10 percent for combined SS and Medicare, then federal tax, then state tax, and maybe local tax. Then you need to put aside retirement, then you have health insurance, sales tax on every thing you buy, etc.

So say you have 30k left which is a high estimate. How much to rent in cooperstown NY? Say a small apartment at 1000 per month or something. That’s 12,000 a year. So that’s 18k left. And you still are without a car, insurance on the car, food, etc.

In other words, you need a spouse that is a surgeon to have that job.

My problem is the salary they offered was too low. My offer was between 60K and 70K - and they want me to start on a salary of 40K. It’s a full time job within their research and library center. What would you guys do?

so i will say, having gone last year.....Cooperstown is a very expensive place because of the tourism of the Two big tournaments 4 months out the year on top of people coming to the hall of fame. So you will more than likely have to live outside the city to be able to afford it on that type of salary and still would be very tough.

you quality of life will be low low

now its a beautiful area of the country but outside of town...its extreme rural and very very high poverty from the looks of it.

also besides the lake and baseball....aint shite to do. I mean not shite and you are far away from everything on top of it getting cold as a mother fricker in the winter there.

there are some good restaurants in town though and the lake is absolutely beautiful in the summer. The town is very nice and pretty but not upscale at all especially once you get outside fo main street.

so question is...do you have kids at home? married? what kind of lifestyle you looking for?

It is a low cost of living area. I would have to live in Utica or Syracuse to make it work. They’ve given me a week to make a decision.

Syracuse is an hour and 40 min drive down little small mountain roads. Utica is better but still an hour

and no its cooperstown itself is not low coast of living area due to the rental market there being crazy because of the tournaments.

shite, from june-aug rent in cooperstown is over 1k a week not matter what. Those people make their annual nut during the tournament months during the summer.

Sounds like a cool job to do after you retire and looking for a fun hobby that pays for itself.

Easy decision. Decline. $40k is insultingly low.

You have the real world and you have pretend world. You can either live in the real world - where you work somewhere tolerable and you build an actual, livable life. Here unfortunately work is work. Or you can work somewhere making $40K but loving what you do. Here, work is play. But you're poor as frick.

The world needs ditch diggers. It doesn't necessarily need the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

1999 called. They want their salary offer back.

Take the job and another one up there. Go and clock in at the HOF, then go to your real job, stopping by in the afternoon to clock out. If they pretend to pay you, you pretend to work there.

Good point. Another thing to consider for that position. I absolutely lowballed everything and it still would be tight. Like ebt card for assistance tight.

My house and cars are paid off and I would lose sleep tonight if I was told that day that I would have to live off of 40k. And this would be in Northeast Mississippi.

In upstate New York...that's not much. I love that place and love visiting there. I think they are offering low because they can get a retiree to do the job for 40K.

Uhh yikes you'd have to triple that for me to live anywhere near Springfield, Mass

Eta- read that as basketball. Upstate NY is very nice and pretty conservative.. but still a hard no.. especially which what's going on in NYC
