Just run with her so she can pace you... 10 min pace should be doable...

that is like a 9:30 min pace

For real. For reference, the last 5k event i did was 3 months after finishing 6 months of brutal chemotherapy, coming off a torn meniscus, age 43, hot, humid, late sunny start, and a significant uphill grade, with zero training, and i came in at 23 min. I'm not fast, even in great shape.

OP needs to nut up.

That isn’t exactly super impressive for a runner.

So here’s the thing, and others have alluded to this already, but a 29 minute 5k, while not spectacular, is an above average 5k time. And since the majority of people don’t run ever, it’s a really good time compared to the average adult.

I wouldn’t pay too much attention to the “it’s just a 10 minute mile crowd”, because while that’s true for people who run regularly, you’re probably not going to go out and run three of those back-to-back.

For a reference, I ran my first 5k when I was 31. I hadn’t been very active at all for the previous 7 or 8 years except for about a month or two of casual running on the treadmill prior to the race. I ran a 28:39, and I felt like absolute death for about two days after.

Like others have said, try to keep pace with her if you can. She’ll probably pull away from you eventually, especially if there’s any elevation but just keep running and finish. Then tell her the truth afterwards. She’ll respect you for it and you’ll feel better about the whole thing.

Happy running

Here's what you should do: come out the gate running as fast as you possibly can - run like the wind. Shoot past her line of sight, then have an Uber waiting to pick you up and drive you 1/2 KM from the finish line. Repeat step 1 and triumphantly take 1st place in the 5k. You are guaranteed to get laid. You're welcome.

Just run next to her the whole time and make conversation don’t worry about beating her time. She will enjoy the fact you spent time with her rather than tried to show out

Cocaine or methamphetamine baw, I dont condone long term usage..

But I've lied to impress too. It Just didnt involve competitive running for 30 minutes.

Here..pay some person to have an accident. A panhandler or an acquaintance to have some sort of an accident where you "have to stop out of human compassion" or some bull shite that puts you over as a good guy. Involving an animal needing help is a plus too. Just be sure YOU are the one that is the first responder.

Then finish the race at your own pace.

Real options:
1. Run with her and just tell her you are going to "take it easy" and go at her pace. Just try to look like you're not dieing

2. It is hot as hell and humid as all shite right now. "Cramping up" is an easy excuse to slow down/ walk some.

3. Pull a muscle on your training run today

If you’re even remotely fit, 29 minutes to run a 5k should be pretty easy.

Why does he have to run with her? Can't he just say he could not find her and then meet her after the race?

First, every decent runner I ever did a feature story on said they couldn't make it one time around a football track (1/4 of a mile) when they first started running. As in, they couldn't keep running for even 1/4 mile at first.

Not in a race setting. Correct.

I suck arse at training. Times are abysmal, get bored easily, stop to drink water, walk 100 feet, etc. Race day, even for a 5K, I feel much better and find someone to pace myself with and go.

quote:

You just don't show up and run a 5K in under 30 minutes if you've never run before

You can if you're in decent physical shape and have someone to pace you. Pace setting and breathing rhythm will be his biggest issues to run a 30min 5k. The mental part of it will be eliminated if he's running with his gf and talking/engaging with her.

It’s a 5k. You have to be a really lazy out of shape piece of shite to not be able to run a 5k without puking.

Ran a 32 minute 5k last year. This is with no previous cardio or running and pushing a baby jogger for the 2nd half.

A sub 30 minute 5k should be easy for anyone in normal shape.

Also, I signed my kid up for the race to get a shirt. She placed 1st in the 12 under at 2.5 years old as the time tags were connected to the shirts.
