My doc just had me start taking Red Yeast Rice pills.
It contains a lovastatin (monacolin K), same as the prescription statins. Have you had your blood work done since you started taking them? I ask because many RyRE you buy in the US have almost no lovastatins because it is unregulated.

Which is high, your LDL, Triglycerides, or total cholesterol?

I’m not a physician but eating right and exercise usually do the trick.
I recommend the NSNG diet (google it) and some cardio.

You still need a low fat low cholesterol diet, and possibly another cholesterol medication. I'm just listing a non statin, not writing a prescription.

So doctors of the OT, tell me how to do it
Easiest way is going to start intermittent fasting. Eat two meals daily, lunch & dinner. Make each meal whole foods that you cook. Make it clean as in it needs to be meats and veggies 80-90% of the time. You can have fruit too. Your meats need to be unprocessed meats like salmon, grass fed beef, free range chicken, seafood, pork tenderloin, etc. All need to be grilled, baked, broiled, air fryer, or pan seared. Don't do fried foods.
Overall you need to be in a caloric deficit though use MyFitnessPal to track things but essentially it needs to break down about like this, use the palm/fist method of measuring
12 pm Lunch:
8-12 oz of meat think two palm fulls
1-2 fist full of veggies
Snack around 3pm-
1-2 cups of fruit
6pm Dinner-
10-12 oz meat- think 3 palm fulls
1-2 fist full of veggies
1 cup fruit
That is it.
For exercise- start by trying to make sure you get 10k steps in daily and doing 75 pushups & situps nightly. If you want to start lifting weights, see my greyskull thread on the H&F board.

The types of fats are important.

I joined a CrossFit gym baw. 5 days a week for an hour a day. Cholesterol and blood pressure went to normal. Lost 0 weight but went from 25% body fat to 19%. Was going to a normal gym but the fanatics at the CrossFit gym help keep me engaged.
As for diet. Working out hard 5 days a week doesn’t match my prior beer heavy lifestyle. Also I tend to eat lighter meals before so I don’t feel like I will puke during the workout.
Make a change baw. Or take the pill and give up.

And what science do you base this statement on?

Exercise. Eat more fat and no sugar or carbs.

Step One: ignore 99% of posts in this thread (this one being in the 1%)
Step Two: research lipids and blood cholesterol and find a doctor who actually knows anything about it, cares to know anything about it, and will do a LOT more work before Rxing a statin.
Step Three: find some useful threads on Health & Fitness Board. Some have good resources and links to scientific articles and such.
General pointers:
The goal of "lowering your cholesterol" is way too simplistic to garner any meaningful advice, even if you were asking someone other than the OT.
Get an NMR particle test. If your doctor doesn't know what that is or hasn't suggested it, then get a new doctor. You can also order it online and just go into any LabCorp for it.
Keep in mind that your various blood cholesterol levels can fluctuate hour-to-hour, so making lifelong decisions based on one test is hardly advisable. (eta: or tests 3 months apart, btw.)
You should also know that LDL is neuroprotective, and low LDL has been associated with higher all-cause mortality, dementia, and other poor health outcomes.
If nothing else, pay attention to your triglycerides to HDL ratio. You want that number to be better than 2:1 (the closer to 1 the better--less than one even better).
If you want to really know this stuff, start with people like Ron Krauss and Malcolm Kendrick and go from there. Peter Attia's cholesterol tag is a good start too: LINK
eta: a really accessible podcast by a cardiologist is the Diet Doctor with Dr. Bret Scher. He interviews all sorts of great people and it doesn't get too esoteric with the scientific language. He does a good job of keeping it understandable to the layman.
eta 2: to the fricktard downvoters, please point out the bad advice in this post. Thanks.

Smartass answer - stop eating processed food, fast food, processed sugar, simple carbohydrates, and work out ya fat, non eating healthy bastard.
Serious answer. -All of the above. Eat more leafy green veggies. Lean meats. A frick ton. Fiber is key. Whole grains. Leafy green veggies.
Get checked for LPa. You may have genetic disposition. I’d also get a coronary calcium score and a CIMT test.
You may need the pill. Some people do. You may not. Best of luck.
Stop eating bullshite disguised as food.
