I'm sure its been covered. But I had a similar dilemma. I went to light keto on a program called Profile by Sanford.

I have a protein shake for breakfast, protein bar for mid morning and mid afternoon snack. For lunch I usually eat a salad with a protein. For dinner I have a protein and vegetables. The profile program says you can have unlimited vegetables if you need a snack or get hungry.

I have lost 35 lbs so far and getting closer to my goal of 200 lbs. I was 250 lbs and had new bloodwork done at 215 lbs. The results were night and day different. For the first time in years my results were positive and much better. My cholesterol fell right into range. I have even lowered my target goal to 180 because I never feel that hungry and the pounds are melting away.

My dad is having bypass surgery soon, so I actually started getting serious about what I eat and the pounds came off and the blood work got a lot better.

Pill won't hurt you, I take one. Cardiologist I consulted with takes a Statin as a precaution. Take one and eat what you want within reason. They are miracle drugs.

They do affect some people negatively. One study suggested 30% of people experience adverse affects but other studies show it to be much lower.

Been there, done that.

1. If you can lower it by eating right and exercise, do that.
2. If you do above and it doesn't lower then do the pill.

If you choose neither be willing to learn what a heart attack feels like. You will regret it.

But after the heart attack they may put you on Repatha - miracle drug IMHO

Did your doctor give any recs?

Eat a high fiber diet. Stop eating shitty fats and shitty carbs. Eat more healthy fats like avocados, nuts, grassfed red meat (grassed beef, bison, lamb), healthy oils (olive, avocado) and fatty fish.

Most of your carbs should be vegetables and fruits. If they're not, make sure they're high in fiber. Ancient grains and whole grains like farro and wheatberry. Oatmeal. 2-3 fistfuls of veggies minimum at every meal.

Exercise daily. Even if it's just a walk.

Eat fish, chicken, boiled eggs, drink lots of water. Baked or grill food don’t fry.

Cut out pasta, rice, bread, fried foods, fast foods, and sodas.

You can make it even simpler: Eat like a hunter-gatherer. Which, oddly enough, is how we as a species evolved to eat.

It sure is.

But you made this statement:

Skip the fat and butter.

Might want to go back and actually read the article you linked.

This is not a big deal. My cholesterol was under 200 but my doc didn't like the ratio and the bad one was around or just above 100. My cholesterol now with a low dose of Prevastatin is about 160 or so with a good I think HDL. I had coronary calcium screening and I was at 5 which is essentially 0. But the doctor whom I talked was in his mid 40s and he said he and many cardiologists he knows take a statin preemptively. His coronary calcium number was 0 which is the same as a newborn. Get a coronary calcium score. If it's high do something about it and take a statin. If it's low take a statin and live long anyway.

Did you read the fricking link?

quote:

Saturated fats — such as those in meat, butter, cheese and other full-fat dairy products — raise your total cholesterol. Decreasing your consumption of saturated fats to less than 7 percent of your total daily calorie intake can reduce your LDL cholesterol by 8 to 10 percent

Holy fricking shite. Isn't that amazing? Thanks Mayo Clinic!

You said cut the "fats and butter".

Saturated fats =/= all fats.

They actually promote healthy fats in foods like nuts, avocados, and fish. You never want to cut out all fat, because your body needs it for essential functions.

Oatmeal one meal.

No fried food at all.

Its summer. Enjoy locally grown fruit one meal. As much as you like. Two or three servings.

Baked fish or white chicken or lean cut of beef or pork, with a huge salad or boiled greens. Rice or corn as desired.
