TLDR: Watch some of the videos at the bottom of the post for potentially life saving/altering information.

I know Diabetes is kind of a running joke on here and I just wanted to share my experience since it may help someone out there.

I’m 50 and basically tried to follow a low fat diet and exercise since cardiovascular disease runs in the family. I’m 5’9” and had slowly put on weight until I was a little over 200lbs. Dr. said eat better and exercise more even though I was eating how the American Heart Association and other “experts” said I should and exercising. So I kept on keeping on.

In December I was sick on and off for a few weeks and was trying to avoid going to the doctor until the new year since I was in the middle of changing insurance providers and primary care physician. Just felt like crap and kept getting worse. Then I was thirsty like I can’t describe, drinking water like crazy. My wife stopped at Walgreens on the home and bought a Glucometer and we tested my blood sugar, and it was over 600 mg/dl. I basically maxed the reading and it would only read High.

Since it’s 2 days before Christmas I can’t get in with my doctor, Urgent care says hell no and off to the Emergency room I go. Spent 7 hours in a room with them basically doing nothing but giving me 2 IVs of fluid. They did blood work but it kept coming back with errors since my sugar was so high and I was dehydrated. Blood pressure was through the roof.

My blood sugar drops to “only” 400 mg/dl (and this was after not eating for 36 hours) and after much debate they decide not to admit me and give me a prescription of Metformin and tell me good luck and to see my PCP.

I go home and go online and start researching diabetes and how I should eat. End up reading the American Diabetes Association info and try to “eat better” but I’m already not eating much different than they say. I cut some bread and stop the few soft drinks etc.

In early January I finally get in with my new Dr. Have blood test run and they are a train wreck. Total shite show. A1C is 10.4, triglycerides are over 600, so high they can’t get a breakdown of cholesterol. Damn near everything out of whack. Doc says, “You’re diabetic.” I say, “No shite”. More prescriptions, up the dosage of Metformin but I don’t want insulin.

So now I go home and am determined to not go the way of the “normal diabetic”. I search and find some Youtube channels that seem to make sense.

I decide to start eating Keto and basically cut all carbohydrates, basically the only carb I eat are from the few vegetables I eat, no more rice or pasta. So high fat and moderate protein. No more oatmeal and fruit for me,now it's bacon, eggs and butter for breakfast etc. The total opposite of what conventional wisdom said. I also cut all “vegetable oils” like canola etc. Just olive, avocado, real butter, bacon grease etc. Zero processed food and "eating clean"

I wasn’t able to exercise much since I was feeling so bad and blood pressure being so high so only walked for about 30 minutes a couple a time of day after meals.

Fast forward to early April and new blood test. A1C now 4.9 triglycerides and other levels are in line or just off, should be perfectly fine at next checkup. I’ve lost 40 lbs. and feel great, more energy than I’ve had in years. Doc says things look great and keep doing what I’m doing. Meds cut and I hope to be off last ones in July. I think I could stop all now but acquiesced to Doc’s wishes to wait until July to make sure everything is stabilized.

Medical decisions are very personal but I strongly believe diabetes is 100% reversible. Also many who think they are safe are actually in danger and don't know it since much of the information out there is flat out wrong or outdated. If anyone is interested in feeling better or worried about their health or diabetes I would suggest watching some of the following on Youtube, It's free and could save your life.

It's not. You'll always be a diabetic. What you've found (which is true) is that if you follow a very strict diet it can be controlled. This is not sustainable for most people. Good for you if you can maintain the diet that is necessary.

It isn't. Low carb diets for diabetics is routine.

Because they've developed eating habits over many years and most aren't willing to break those habits. They'd rather just medicate the problem away (in their minds).

ETA: A type 1 friend once told me that if all he ate was broccoli he wouldn't need insulin but who can do that?

Thanks

At the beginning I went to a diabetes class my insurance wanted me to go too and the group had a big discussion on how the metformin made them have the runs when they had a sugary food and the best method of coping with it and how to sit next to the bathroom in restaurants depending on what they were going to eat etc. I was like WTF is wrong with y'all? I haven't been back and I'm sure they don't miss me.

Welcome to the red pill.

Where you finally realize EVERYTHING the gov has told you for the pat 65 years is either:

A) to control you or
B) to stuff money into the pockets of Big X so they can feed the gov grift

Big X - food, pharma, diet, whatever.

They charge you extra to "eat healthy", then charge you for the rest of your life for the meds and Dr visits.

My 80 year old dad just did the same thing. He stopped eating at 6 PM. Went from 250 to 175. No more diabetes and he feels great! Very active. Life has changed in the last 18 months. All biomarkers looking good. He also follows Dr. Berg along with the other youtube guru's you list.

No because I eat healthy and exercise. My grandpa has been type 1 for years and it killed his son, my uncle, who had your same attitude.

If being diabetic isn't a wake up call, quite frankly, I don't feel bad for you if you refuse to change.

get your eyes checked too, it can cause blood vessels in the eyes to swell and burst which can cause loss of vision and/or reduced eyesight focus (blurred vision)

avoid all forms of regular potatoes as well, they are bad for you, and switch over to sweet potatoes which isnt bad for you because its a different type of starch in those

I agree that MOST people aren’t willing to do the work. But some are. I started to develop eyesight issues, headaches, lethargy, etc. I knew it was blood sugar related and started a low carb/Keto type diet immediately. Super strict for 4 months or so. All of those symptoms were gone within a week. Still doing low carb. I’ll have a day here or there where I eat all the bad stuff I crave but then right back on the diet. It can be sustained if you are willing to work and sacrifice, which most Americans are not.

Which is exactly my point. I live by the 90/10 rule on eating now. Eat as good as possible 90% of the time. It works well for me but as you noted most Americans will not do this.
