Long story short I received an email on my phone while traveling from our HR person.

It basically said we need some specified gift cards for some clients so please stop and get 10 of them at 100$ per and expense it.
They are needed urgently so send a pic of the bar codes and attach via email.

This came from an iPad so there was no sig contact Info under name.

I felt stupid bc I actually bought them but after a few mins I was like wtf? This is crazy so I called my manager and was like wtf is going on so he said nah.. this type stuff goes through me.
I ended up getting store to cancel transaction and discard the gift cards.

Just kind of scary you can get an email from
Your HR person with their name and your name appearing same as it would on a legit email.

Damn that’s actually a pretty legit scam. And looking up HR people and sales people on LinkedIn is probably pretty easy

Bruh that's like email spoofing 101. Been around since the late 90's.

The same thing happened to our new receptionist. But came from our CFO. I had told her she can purchase things and he would reimburse her, so she thought nothing of it and spent/lost $500. The company obviously paid her back and I had to explain I meant you could spend like $30 on a birthday cake. We would never expect you to spend $500.

Apparently the scam looks really legit. NEVER make a finacial transaction if you don't have verbal confirmation.

Not sure I would send a pic like that if there was even a chance it could be to an HR person

Definitely wouldn’t send it on company email either

Man, that sounds like a pretty damn slick scam...I am betting that 90% of the people they hit with it end up falling for it.

Thanks for posting it here!

It's actually becoming a big problem with "fake" emails coming from "within" your organization. I posted an article about this a while back and some type of survey showed where a lot of employees fell for some type of phishing email from the company head.
I think one of the problems is that most companies are very strict with IT control, etc. you wouldn't expect some phishing email would get through the protections, let alone one that appears to be from another employee / manager.

In the risk management world we call this “social engineering” and it’s a bitch.

Some of these scammers will monitor executives emails to pick up on their tendencies (words used, tone of email, how it’s ended-regards, thank you, best, whatever)

The days of the Nigerian prince are long gone. They work harder now.

Oh I can top this. Email spoof from our HR team to login to a certain site to update contact info.

That site records their company logins.

Since my company was so gung-ho for single sign-on, the scammers are now able to login to all sorts of good stuff.

The real fun came, when several people found out their direct deposits were going to off-shore bank accounts they had no access to.

The company half-assed the SSO security and that cost them several thousand.

I strung along one of those “Microsoft helpline” callers who wanted to help me with my computer. I got him to the point where he said I needed to pay him in Visa gift cards.

My company’s email got hacked the other day. “Manager” sent email about opening a shared file between me and one of my clients.

I found it weird because everything goes through me for this client. It was a phishing email, and I was smart enough to recognize it.

Got a huge anti-phishing campaign going on at the corporate office, and trickling down to the branches, right now. Same as others have stated, look official with company logo, CEO’s contact info etc. There are usually some tell-tale signs that it’s a counterfeit, but some have obviously fallen for it.
