I'm not in IT, but it seems to me that there should be a way to pick out the fake emails. Especially fortune 1000 size, should be able to have a way to weed through John.smith and John_smith.

Its pretty simple then, you make all business accounts the same type of formula. Then you trash anything outside of that.

Also, almost all of these scamms don't have email signatures. As said, its simply blank, the name, or "sent from iphone".

That's a clear sign of a scam.

The spoof email addresses can look exactly like the real ones.

Even if there is a way to tell, it would involve the header and a degree of technical sophistication unreasonable to expect outside of IT.

The same thing happened to our new receptionist. But came from our CFO. I had told her she can purchase things and he would reimburse her, so she thought nothing of it and spent/lost $500. The company obviously paid her back and I had to explain I meant you could spend like $30 on a birthday cake.
Pics of her if she’s that gullible....

And you can throw a few in of yourself too!

I found it weird because everything goes through me for this client. It was a phishing email, and I was smart enough to recognize it.

Best one I know that happened...closing attorney's email was being monitored by hackers..day before a mortgage closing they sent wiring instructions to the bank, a few minutes later, the bank got another email from attorney's same address saying sorry, I sent you wrong wiring instructions....they sent 1.2mm to fraudulent account... luckily the receiving bank flagged it as potential fraud and froze funds

The most recent here have actually had the full CEO signature with contact info and correct email. However, just hover over the email and it shows it forwards to a different account. As you said, there are ways to figure it out. There are sometimes misspellings, things out of place etc. One referenced our EH&S department. We don’t have EH&S. Environmental, Health and Safety are each separate entities within our corporate structure.

no it wouldn’t it’s easy to tell. Most people don’t look at the email address, they just look at the abbreviated version of it.

Long story short I received an email on my phone while traveling from our HR person.

It basically said we need some specified gift cards for some clients so please stop and get 10 of them at 100$ per and expense it.
They are needed urgently so send a pic of the bar codes and attach via email.

This came from an iPad so there was no sig contact Info under name.

I felt stupid bc I actually bought them but after a few mins I was like wtf? This is crazy so I called my manager and was like wtf is going on so he said nah.. this type stuff goes through me.
I ended up getting store to cancel transaction and discard the gift cards.

Just kind of scary you can get an email from
Your HR person with their name and your name appearing same as it would on a legit email.

your boss should have fired you for being stupid

2 years ago the Ops manager had to fire a lead because the lead took a phone call from someone claiming to be IT. Said stores were having issues with gift cards, asked if we were having any issues. Lead was like "uh, I'm not sure."

The scammer told her to cash out a $500 gift card, check the balance in the register to make sure the system read it, then give him the information off the back of the gift card so he could verify it on his side.

We only found out about it because he had told her to cancel the transaction afterwords to cancel the gift card. She didn't know how to cancel a transaction after it had finalized (you can't at store level) so she called for help.

Needless to say when they contacted treasury to reverse it, the card had already been spent and since it was cashed out through the register there was no way of undoing it.

My MawMaw called me once asking if I was in jail. Apparently some scammer called her and demanded $5k for bail. Although she didn't fall for it, I can see how someone would.

The scariest one I've heard of is very similar: Scammer calls you saying that your child has been kidnapped and they demand ransom immediately. They even have a child there pose as your kid and say a few words into the phone.

IT in my company is really pushing training for phishing scams. They’ll actually send fake phishing emails to everyone to see who falls for it and clicks the fake link. Some are easy to spot others are done very well. As soon as someone clicks it, a message pops up from IT basically calling you a retard.

The results go up to our CEO (10k people in our org) quarterly and he takes note of who’s group fricks up. He’s even fallen for one as well as a few BU presidents.
