Plus as it's been pointed out, most don't only sell donuts. There is one down the road from my shop that sells breakfast sandwiches on English muffins and kolaches. Not to mention, they're only open until like noon, if that late.
This and the fact that the service industries go buy them in droves for clients.
Medical sales, industrial sales, etc. Go buys several boxes and deliver them to the calls of the week.
And all the families with young kids. We probably get them once a month on a Sunday for the kids.

who's eating that many donuts?
The Phat man in Knoxville probably keeps that shop in the $$$$
Cops in the rest of the world, seriously every donut shop is filled with cops.

They put crack cocaine in the donuts.

Keep in mind their second or maybe even first highest revenue product is coffee...where one cup costs them maybe 3 cents, but they sell it at 100x that.

Maybe they make it up on coffee?
Oh yeah, this is a big deal too. Want 12oz of chocolate milk? That'll be $2.49. Want 16oz of community coffee? $3.09.
These places also crush it on the "extras" that people order along with their boxes of sugary profit margins.

A very good documentary about this topic is The Donut King on Hulu. Features a Cambodian refugee who became the largest owner of shops in the West by forming a way of putting other Cambodian families in business. So successful, they pushed Dunkin out of the West Coast for eons. Couldn't compete w the family model. He had an incredible gambling addiction after years of wealth and it all but crumbled for him. Fascinating shite. Great watch.
I actually had a donut place run by Cambodians near my old workplace. Supposedly there is an investor who recruits them and funds them into existence and he makes a small royalty plus payback of the investment. It really cleared up how broke immigrants with little language skills could open a business. I suspect somewhere in the background the investor has nefarious dealings to get the capital but I’m sure our first-rate FBI

The local ones around here make more selling King Cakes for mardi gras then they make for the rest of the year combined.

in a convenient location
Near a police precinct or a medical marijuana shop would be the ideal place for a donut shop.

There's a pizza shop in Huntington Beach that is family owned for a few decades by four grown men. Likely Serbs, Croats, Ukrainian? etc. They never smile and always have a stern look on their face, like you're interrupting them.
Nobody hardly goes in there, but somehow they make enough to stay in business.

It’s probably a lot of work/hours to turn a profit though.

I don’t know but the donut shop by my house makes the best Apple Fritter

That's because you've never had an apple fritter or chocolate eclair from Mary Lee's in Baton Rouge, baw.
Posted on 1/23/24 at 5:55 pm to KCSilverTiger
Local Mary Lee shop is usually sold out of the good shite by 9 am. Donut is basically flour oil and sugar.

I’m just high enough that this…this thread is just what I need.

I haven’t had a donut in years. I would if offered one tomorrow morning but I live in Texas, so we eat breakfast tacos.
The best taco shop in town actually doubles as a donut shop
