Seems like those remote cameras have improved in hardiness over the last year or two. They always seemed to get knocked out before, right when things got interesting.

Dangerous storm surge continues in Cedar Key, FL with strong westerlies on the backside of Hurricane Idalia. Here is the peak storm surge:

That one house had the AC units mounted about 3 inches above the surge water.

Quick radar breakdown of how #Hurricane #Idalia's core evolved in the hours before landfall in the Florida Big Bend region.

As several mentioned, an eyewall replacement cycle appeared to begin just before landfall. There were some telltale signs on radar beforehand.

In fact, there were also hints of an ERC occuring in high-res guidance.

The HWRF run from 18z yesterday almost perfectly captured #Idalia's core structure in the hours before landfall. NWP modeling of TC inner-core changes have come such a long way in the last few decades.

Haha, you’re good man. Yes, that shark in the road picture has been circulating for many years now. I just like to throw it into these hurricane threads with a stupid caption to lighten the mood.

Mark Sudduth is the pioneer of the remote cam during hurricanes. He has worked on that technology for two decades and now his cams can stream under water.

It looks like surge was under 7ft? What changed as far as that seems very minimal for a cat 4 in an area that’s completely unprotected?

It’d be more impressive if they stayed above the water line.

It was around that in places like Cedar Key. It might have been higher closer to where the center came ashore.

Idalia was starting to weaken as it neared landfall. It had ingested dry air and appeared to be in the beginning stages of an eyewall replacement cycle. I believe it was difficult for those highest winds to actually make it to the surface, which would have lessened the surge.

He does what he can to get them in a safe position, yet still in a position to see the important stuff. They have to deploy these rapidly, and they are usually mounted on power poles or street light poles. It’s usually just him and 1 or 2 other people putting them up, so they are basically just limited to the height of the ladder they can carry in their vehicle.
