Back in May:
quote:

NOAA’s outlook for the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season, which extends from June 1 to November 30, predicts a 65% chance of an above-normal season, a 25% chance of a near-normal season and a 10% chance of a below-normal season.

For the 2022 hurricane season, NOAA is forecasting a likely range of 14 to 21 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher), of which 6 to 10 could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 3 to 6 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5; with winds of 111 mph or higher). NOAA provides these ranges with a 70% confidence.

Nice call.

The average hurricane season over the last 30 years sees 6 named storms by the end of August, 2 of which are hurricanes.
We have had 3 tropical storms thus far, with not much more on the horizon.

in early August:
quote:

NOAA forecasters have slightly decreased the likelihood of an above-normal Atlantic hurricane season to 60% (lowered from the outlook issued in May, which predicted a 65% chance). The likelihood of near-normal activity has risen to 30% and the chances remain at 10% for a below-normal season.

today:
quote:

The Atlantic crucible of hurricanes hasn’t had a storm all month and if the calm holds it will stand as the quietest August in 25 years.

The expanse of ocean between Africa and the Caribbean Sea has only had two stormless Augusts in more than seven decades of recordkeeping -- one in 1961 and the other in 1997, said Phil Klotzbach, lead author of Colorado State University’s seasonal storm forecast. August typically is the beginning of the hurricane season’s most-active phase.

I live in the very dead end of my neighborhood and always get fricked when it comes to power.

For Katrina, we were living on a cul-de-sac that was very easy to miss if you weren't looking for it.

Entergy kept passing us by until every other street in the neighborhood had power except us.

I kept calling Entergy, but kept on getting the canned response of "Sir, we are getting to every street as quickly as possible."
"You don't understand, EVERY street has power except for us," I would say. But it didn't help.

Across the street from me lived a crazy guy I called "Sarge" because he wore one of those Marine Corps Drill Instructor hats all the time. I'm not even sure if he was even in the military.

Anyway, I was outside talking to him when we see an Entergy truck drive by in the distance.

Old Sarge runs into his house, grabs two cases of beer he had in a cooler, and hauls arse over to the Entergy truck.

He tells the Entergy guys "Hey, yall like beer? Here's two cases for you if you follow me."

Our power was back on the next day.

We currently have a possible Der.....wind storm marching across the Midwest. Impacting many areas of Northern Illinois, Indiana, and now into Michigan.

Reports of 60-80mph+ winds and lots of damage reports.

I, personally, am counting this as Hurricane Danielle.

Once they are broken in, those hats are "campaign hats" that the military wore in the field in the Spanish American War. They are made of sturdy felt and are solid outdoor headgear.

Gonna make it through August with no hurricanes for 2022. And 0 named storms in 2 months.

But of course it only takes 1 to ruin your day

The amazing part to me is just how lit the set up in the tropics is. MJO placed perfectly, getting well timed CCKW passages. If you told me this would be the base state at the end of August, I would have been very very worried.

But the subtropics have been a shitshow of upper lows that are bringing dry air and shear to the hurricane party. Shades of 2013.

GFS doesnt even have any legitimate looking waves coming off Africa through 9/15. That African wave train is gonna shut down a week or 2 after that.

Just a weird season

Yup the memories of this morning a year ago will be bad for a lot of people. Ours has pics of our crushed trailer. Very disturbing. But ended up being a blessing at the same time.

Everyone is all excited about no hurricanes this year. People don't realize that a lot of people make their incomes during hurricane season and a lack of hurricanes greatly impacts their lives.

I have a buddy who was just laid off from a job he's had for 15 years. They are down to a skeleton crew. It's a company that is responsible for moving the cone.

Can he transfer to the company that shifts the goal posts of pre-season predictions?
