The projected path of this storm bears an uncomfortable resemblance to Opal in 1995, when meteoroguessologists did not accurately project and were irresponsibly unconcerned that a sub-920 mb monster was coming dangerously close to New Orleans.
I remember walking home from St. George’s on the afternoon of the O.J. Simpson verdict when a giant oak branch nearly crushed me on Prytania. The winds were already 40–50 mph. Had Opal jogged only slightly north, New Orleans would have found itself in a very different and catastrophic early next morning. The city had scarcely prepared. It remains difficult to understand how little concern there was.
