Wow...
Inquiring minds want to know if this annular hurricane thing is just a myth.
If that doesn't qualify, what does?

Start planning a road trip. Not kidding.
Too big and powerful to gamble on this one.

Another piece of evac advice - extended stay hotels are the shite for evacuating. The suite setup kept me sane while dealing with a panicky wife and an 18 month old child. They were able to go to bed and I was able to sit on couch and have a beer and watch tv. We were also able to cook and save lots of $ which is important when you know you're going to be coming $10k out of pocket for an insurance deductible.

There's obvious spiral banding going on there. It's not annular, despite the big ole eye and general roundness.

That looks like a perfect hurricane.

I just asked myself if we could be watching the perfect storm in real time. It really is impressive.

Yup. I left BR at midnight on airline before Katrina hit. Flew all the way to Vicksburg. Meanwhile, interstates were jammed.

must have gone to the Nash Roberts School of Meteorology...
seriously though, this storm is extremely scary, I hope the models are accurate and she stays out in the Atlantic and just brushes the coastline...

I'm a Cop in upstate SC. Greenville area. Most of the ensembles have this thing coming straight towards us.
My question is this - being that it's so strong would it still be a hurricane by the time it made its way into upstate South Carolina? Would we still see devastating impacts? Sorry if a dumb question - just not used to this kind of thing.

Hurricane Irma is so strong it's showing up on seismometers — equipment designed to measure earthquakes.
"What we’re seeing in the seismogram are low-pitched hums that gradually become stronger as the hurricane gets closer to the seismometer on the island of Guadeloupe," said Stephen Hicks, a seismologist at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom.
Does this happen often?

Look back at the pictures of Katrina when she was a 5 in the gulf. She stayed a 5 long enough it didnt even matter she was a 3 or whatever at landfall. The damage was still catastrophic and storm surge massive. I suspect as long as this thing stays a five for as long as they think it will it wont matter a whit if its a 4 or 5 when it hits; the damage will be total and catostrophic. I think this storm will redefine how we look at these going forward much like how Andrew did.

That’s funny, my seismographs aren’t picking it up yet

Quick question.
I'll be in West Virginia next Monday through Friday (bout an hour outside of DC).
I'm looking at the model output and wondering if flights might be cancelled or moved because of the remnants.
Or if I should be concerned about any mudslide issues etc.
Anybody with experience with this?
Also my father in-law is in St.Thomas and I will let y'all know how everything goes. He's an old school survival guy so hopefully he will be ok!
