Evac question from a rookie. Starting to think leaving Florida just isn't realistic. How far inland will it be safe from water and the really bad winds?
Or is that just not possible.
Honestly, no one knows the best answer to your question about how far inland to go. Obviously, the further inland, the better it typically is. However, in many a case, just like Harvey, these systems can move inland and then just stall out and flood certain areas. We had several tornadoes from Harvey here in Central Alabama and we are hundreds of miles from Harvey's landfalls.
Recall that Camille in 1969 killed quite a number in Virginia and West Virginia due to flooding.
My recommendation is that if you can afford to leave, leave. Take your pets with you and go. If you can't leave or if it is just too difiicult, do what you can.

Albany, ga hilton brand hotels full for thw weekend according to the app.
Columbus ga was available. I booked just in case.
Point being, make plans now or get stuck with fewer options.

What are my fellow FL peeps doing? I don't know what the hell to do. I have always stayed put for every hurricane
Loading up the RV and heading to Baton Rouge. Will probably wait a couple of days to decide.

Where in Florida are you going to be?
I've been through 120 mph sustained, and I NEVER want to go through that again.

917 mb on the last pass, been the way for a couple of hours now. That is good news I suppose.

I'm a Cop in upstate SC. Greenville area. Most of the ensembles have this thing coming straight towards us.
My question is this - being that it's so strong would it still be a hurricane by the time it made its way into upstate South Carolina? Would we still see devastating impacts? Sorry if a dumb question - just not used to this kind of thing.
You'd think that far inland wouldn't be terrible, but there are many notable destructive tropical systems that have damaged inlands. For you in UpState SC, you are getting somewhat mountainous, thus you need to pay close attention to flooding. Camille flooded areas of Virginia and West Virginia

Would be terrifying to know this or similar was your only defense.
Imagine the balls it took to board one of those ships for 2-3 months to come here from Europe.

I hope we don't have to hear about global warming!! This is what Mother Nature does

If you are anywhere near the path of this monster, you can (and should) evacuate. A couple of hours inland makes a hell of a difference. You want to be on the west side as the storm passes, so I would consider heading northwest. If you wait for an evacuation to be announced, you are too late and will be stuck in your car during the storm.

Latest drop was also 917mb. Eye has warmed to 27.0 degrees celsius.

Did 100 MPH for 8 hours. And I would leave for less than that now.
Just not worth the risk.
Will never forget the roar of the wind.

As far as you can get.
Just try to get to higher ground and away from drainage canals or ditches to try to avoid flash flooding. I know that might be difficult.
