Is it though? At a northwest heading with 6 hours and 90 miles to go until landfall, missing the center by 30 miles will cause an exaggerated miss on the coastline.

It's not huge by any reasonable standard, just by how good the NHC has been in recent years at 6 hours out. I figure they just didn't have the center quite right at 4 because it was radar based far away from a site. Pretty much accounts for most of the miss.

Hey RDC, Duke and Slackster, I'm planning to wake up in the middle of the night to order the new iPhone on September 14, is that going to be disrupted by a catastrophic Florence making landfall on Georgia?

*we should have a hurricane thread where rds only posts gifs.

No doubt, the 45 degree angle of approach made it difficult.

Did LA parish governments really cancel school for a tropical storm?

Just got a weather channel “breaking news” - Florence strengthens to Cat 3 in the Atlantic. Let the hype train begin now that Gordon is over.

thanks in advance

The uncertainty with the track of Florence is higher than normal.

Do you think by Saturday we will know a more detailed path for Florence or would it be sometime early next week?

So what are the chances these new storms make their way to Gulf? I have a lot of Armageddon supplies I didn't use for Gordon.

0% chance Florence makes it to the Gulf

Yeah, and a lot of people are really trying to argue it was the most "reasonable" thing they could possibly do.

Man you would think with all the energy consumed last hurricane season, the environment wouldnt be able to support record chasing hurricanes.

It was pretty hard to tell exactly where the center even was for a while.

I assume the system trailing Florence bears watching over the next week or so?

Yeah it's pretty ridiculous given the fact that b 2:30 yesterday afternoon every expert was in agreement that this thing of rain was going in at Pascagoula. They knew that Louisiana and points west of Pascagoula would pretty much be spared anything like RAIN, wind and tidal surge except for real low lying coastal areas. No one is working today. It's not reasonable it's a friggin overreation

OMG!!!! Florence is out in the Atlantic .....those poor fish!!!!!!

Katrina was a huge storm that actually crossed over Plaquemines Parish and hit at the state line with hurricane force winds protruding out from at least 100 miles from the center on the North side of the storm and fair amount of activity off the west side

This storm had no western side to speak of and if it got to Cat 1 it must have been for a nano second.....there is reasonable, then there is overreaction.....like this

Not surprising since the sight of a mere snowflake induces hysteria

Who are these people? The decision has been widely panned in this thread.

I'm wondering if Florence is going to affect my wife's flight to Italy on the 13th.

At the time decisions were being made it was projected to be a hurricane and SELA was in the cone. If you're cancelling school you have to decide the night before. If you close at noon you have to decide early that morning. It's a judgment call with limited information. Nobody wants kids hurt or killed on their watch.
