Yeah that north of Florida Blvd was pretty relevant 20+ years ago. Now, not so much.

3 Tiered Platform:

1. Hard crack-down on crime.
2. Repair all crumbling roads.
3. Pressure wash entire city.

Alright, I’ll bite…

1. Close the Washington street exit and create two lanes to enter from the bridge
2. Instead of TOPPS paying first, require students to take out 0% student loans that get forgiven by TOPPS upon graduation or converted to interest bearing loans if you don’t matriculate in 6 years.
3. Install a toll loop around the city.
4. Install HOV lanes from Oneal lane to downtown.
5. Increase teacher pay to above the state average and add additional alternative schools to house troubled students who don’t need to detract from classroom settings.
6. Enforce jailing for homeless campers. They will move out once word gets out.
7. Remove annual vehicle inspection requirements and instead require 5 year driving exam renewals.
8. Bring back tax breaks for movie productions.
9. Harvest hydroelectric power for city, sell power to other cities.
10. Provide significant rewards for persons who help solve murders.

*Get rid of SWB
*Get rid of Gravy
*Get rid of the Chief of Police.
*Double police salary and number, and hire the best.. Indemnify them from lawsuit or prosecution.... Start crackin skulls.
*Arrest panhandlers and ship to Washington DC.
*Get rid of public schools
*Give vouchers for private schools.
*Parish Prisoners on daily litter detail.
*Drug testing for public housing
*Stronger building zoning laws and outdoor advertisement laws..
*Massive tax incentives for new businesses to move to the city.
*Strict 1 year impounding penalty for drag racing or speeding over 30 mph over speedlimit.

Even if it turns in to a nice city, the weather and lack of outdoor recreation is enough for me to never go back

How would you make the public schools better?

I agree they're terrible. But what is the plan for improvement.

I'd say focus on community schools where the community is more involved. Like when I was a kid. But that's pie in the sky. Community isn't a thing any more.

You’ll never improve any school without support from the parents. And, unfortunately, you’ll never get parental support from the majority of public school parents in BR. They don’t have the sophistication or initiative to be good parents.

Getting better leadership at City Hall, the police department and the DA's office would be a great start

Integration in Baton Rouge was a complete disaster. A hundred or so middle class white kids, were bused to Valley park around 76, (including me) it was so bad, that I bet Catholic Highs enrollment went up 1000% the next year, there was no social media back then, but our experiences, and stories quickly spread. (There is a thread on here about it where several others from that class shared their experiences.)

In retrospect, I honestly wonder if it was bad on purpose. Anyway, it destroyed the public school district and the decent black schools in one swift move.

Anyone know whatever happened to the FFP project after they concluded their tests in the early 2010’s for the river turbines?

I was in Pensacola a couple of weekends ago. As I drove around I saw huge bicycle/jogger sidewalk lanes everywhere and lots of people using them. The only thought I had was that would never work here because no one would feel safe enough to do so. Which tells me the greatest problem in Baton Rouge is crime.

It’s far easier to move away and laugh at these types of discussions, it will only continue to get worse and worse if that’s even possible

I don’t think it was on purpose, I think Judge Parker was either that stupid or getting paid off by private schools / surrounding parishes as it continued to swirl the drain.
