I think it’s dumb as hell since I can cook just as good a steak at home but to each his own.
I won't question your elite cooking skills, but are you getting steakhouse quality on a hotel hot plate? Typically per diem is for traveling employees. If you're otherwise just commuting to the office and back home or working from home, it's just called your salary.

If he is a top producer by a large margin you let that go as long as it’s not out kicking what he brings in and as long as he isn’t telling others what he is doing.

I just made it up. It seemed apt.

Is this an ego thing on my end and I should leave this alone or should I talk to him? I really don't want to rock the boat as I said he is a top producer.
MFer are you reimbursing his expenses? Shut the frick up and stay out his business.

Either have rules or don't.

You spend on downturn betting the come for upswing. Obviously you need to be ahead of market. Anyone can sell when times are great. Being able to do it when it’s tough and not be low is true test of salespersons capabilities.

You have to stop that. What happens when the other reps learn he gets away with it and they can't. It would T me off. Regardless of revenue all are the same. What happens when he has a bad year...is it ok then?
Or tell him to make sure a customer is with him so it's a legit write off.

Cool man. I know the quality of beef is a huge factor in how good a steak will be
Whats your point in here again?

You cant
You were telling someone how they can't cook a steak the way an upscale steak house cooks it as if it takes a specially trained steak cooker to do it like an upscale steakhouse.
First of all, when you go to an upscale place, part of what you are paying for is the environment. And they have really good food because of the quality.
When you tell someone they can't cook like an upscale restaurant you have no clue what you are talking about.
You are trying to backpedal your words. Explain do a better job explaining what you meant or just admit you are wrong. Otherwise, you are trying too hard.

That’s a good point I hadn’t considered actually, tax consequences on both sides if he’s not only just overspending but using what you declare as “per dime” for personal fun unrelated to business and/or travel

Been in sales a long time people who do this are skimming everywhere I promise you.

Give him a “nice sandwich”. Just kidding. Don’t do that. Sounds like he just needs/craves the recognition that he deserves. Perhaps a bonus system or structured profit sharing would be a good option. Let him know he earned it. Don’t let him steal from you.

I can’t speak for other realms but in finance, this is a big big deal and easily a fireable thing. There are layers and layers of red tape around giving gifts and anything in excess is considered a violation of anti-bribery controls

Dude sounds like a true alpha. Probably was laughing the entire meal about how his bitch arse manager is too scared to do anything about it

This. Max per diems are stupid. We have no limit on per diem and people end up spending way less. Every other company that I’ve worked for that had a max, people will literally do anything to spend every bit of it.
I don't know what our per diem is, but I maybe spend $40-$50 per day when I am traveling for work (not including hotels, fuel, etc). I went to Canada for three days and spent $155 for food. I eat fast food for lunch, and I might do a sit down for dinner. I did spend $387 for pizza for a plant when I was visiting in Ohio. I stay at a Marriott type hotel. But I am finance guy and I think business first. There is another guy who spends $150-$200 on food per day, and gets his entertainment paid for (he plays golf all of the time, and travels unnecessarily). To each their own, but I do think $125 is pretty generous.

Does this mean I’m published now?

Make his arse pay the extra over the $125.
Then setup some kind of bonus incentive that rewards employees for bringing in more and publish it to all employees.
Last thing you want to do is piss off the rest of the employees by kissing his arse so bad that they care even less.

You should have a conversation with him.
At the end of the day I never not picked my people on expenses if they produced but if I had a rule on something I held them accountable to it.
