Bestfriend from childhood to current is a dentist. Yea. There's some racket BS out there he can tell you about, especially the corporatized types. Sleazy and shady as frick.
1. You don't need x-rays taken twice a year. shite, you probably don't even need it once a year. I've never had a cavity or any major or hell, minor issue with my teeth in my life. That BS easily adds 50-80$ to your bill for... nothing.
2. Dentists do a once over. Seems most pay should go to a hygienist unless there's a specific problem that actually requires a dentists more educated and skilled hands.
3. Rough hygienists are the fricking worst. I used to have one that was gentle as frick with the cleaning pick and floss. Like she was handling a baby duck. Since that I've had some rough ones poking the hell out of my gums until they're sore by the end of it.

people with no insurance always seem to get perfect checkups.
those with insurance........well, their mouths are usually full of metal.

Are x-rays necessary every other teeth cleaning, or is that just a money grab?

The dentist I know on a personal level are of lessor character than those individuals working in other medical and professional settings.

12 yrs ago, I made an appt with G Bailey in Pville after moving to the area. He used his new xray machine and basically printed out an attack/payment plan for how to fix all my cavities. He wouldn’t tell me exactly how many cavities I had, but it was well into the double digits. In disbelief, I went to another dentist in BR. He said he wanted to fill one tooth. Since then he’s filled one more.

My wife says there was a dentist in Ferriday or Vidalia who ruined the teeth of she and her siblings by filling perfectly good teeth. That would have been 40 years ago.

I had my wisdom teeth out in 06. Went to a dentist and when he went over my xrays with me, said I had THREE cavities as well, and would need to get them filled in addition to having my wisdom teeth pulled. I was pretty shocked, but agreed, because of course I don't want to not take care of 3 cavities. 2 weeks later I went back, not for the cavities, but for something to do with my wisdom teeth. His partner, another dentist, pulled out my xrays and was discussing the procedure, and whether I wanted General or local anesthesia. I asked about the cavities. He looked at the xrays and said "What cavities? Your teeth look great!" I told him that his partner said I had 3 of them while examining the same xrays. He started to get flustered, and said that xrays are always up for different interpretation depending on who is reading them. It was obvious I had just caught them in the middle of a scam. I walked out, and flatly refused to pay for anything else. And I know they were trying to fick me over, because they didnt argue with me not paying at all. Been very wary of dentists ever since.

I'm currently undergoing treatment by a dentist for periodontal disease ussues. In the last two months I've seen the dentist twice, and hygienist 5 times, including a deep cleaning and xrays done with the special xray machine they charge more money for.
Monday, at the end of my final deep cleaning session, she said that she needed to see again in 2 to 3 weeks for an "evaluation". I asked her what had to be evaluated as she has the super xrays and she has been in my mouth 5 times in the last 6 weeks. She said it was an evaluation for future treatment. The evaluation visit would cost me $180.
I called and talked to the dentist about it and he said he would talk to the hygienist and get back to me.
I feel like I should get all my records and xrays from them and go to a new dentist.

Something makes me think a guy getting caught doing unnecessary surgeries on a kid would lose his license real fast.

Dentists are one piece of paper above a full blown shyster. I trust them less than auto mechanics.
You might find a good one but there’s jillion that’ll try to sell you a $800 bite guard that’s just a hard piece of plastic.
