A disturbing new trend in dentistry he calls “creative diagnosis.” Camm concedes that diagnosing tooth decay is subjective, but he says the disparities he has seen are “alarming.”

The dentists who appear to be conjuring up these diagnoses for profit are even targeting children.

I took my 13 yr old for "pre braces" work Monday: Bill $1,446.00 Insurance covers $692.60 Out of Pocket $753.40. F-Me

Most offices were closed for 3 months due to Rona and have to be doing extra unnecessary procedures to catch the books up.

I've been going to the same dentist since I was a kid, and I'm 32. Guy is still practicing, and now his son is going to be taking over the practice completely soon.

Edit: All the DVers just mad I have a trustworthy dentist.

i guarantee this happened to me. went to the dentist with my dad till i was about 14. no issues.

then my mom brought me to hers. First visit, 6 cavities to be filled all of a sudden, then came 4 wisdom tooth extractions. once i turned 18 i skipped the dentist for 15 years (yeah trashy). I went back to the dentist and now go every year and have never had another cavity.

So we got taken for 6 fillings.

No link to full article.

Sensationalism "THE CHILDREN!"

And is that part about "pre braces" your personal experience? If it is, a little explanation would go a long way in helping people decide if it was exorbitant.

Last sentence is a baseless claim..

TL:DR

OP is worthless.

If you get billed, he's overcharging.

This is absolutely happening all over the place. Dentists filling non existent cavities in childrens' baby teeth is especially popular.

Kids got charged for PPE after the last visit. I asked them what was that charge for? When they told me I asked if I could take the gown, plastic shield and other stuff after the cleaning and exam. They took the charge off.

Luckily I have a good friend who is a dentist - unfortunately she can’t control what is charged bc it’s not her practice however I know she’s honest

My oldest has braces, and I’m pretty happy with the work he’s done, but I brought the next two to a different ortho for a second opinion - the guy was like “your kids teeth are messed up and it looks like you need your teeth straightened too, Mom”

So I went back to the ortho my oldest goes to and kept my words to myself

Man something to a lesser degree happened to me recently.

Never had any cavities when I was on my parents insurance when I was younger. Just normal cleans. No cavities or anything just given the standard "be sure to floss, gums are a little red." Never any real issues.

It was that way for years even when I got my own dentist.

However, I had to get a new dentist earlier this year.

I've never had a dentist be rougher than that one when she was cleaning around the gums saying how red and sensitive they were.

Then she literally stabbed my gums when that fricking hook they use and then said "Oh yeah... you're bleeding here and I see you're winching. We're going to give you something to numb it." (I've never needed anything to numb at a cleaning before nor has it ever bled that much.)

Unsurprisingly she recommended that I come in again in 3 months instead of the regular 6 months for another cleaning even though they acknowledged insurance usually only pays for 2 a year.

FWIW I didn't have any cavities or any other issues.

Needles to say I haven't been back and will be looking for a new dentist.

Happened to me. Been going to the same dentist for years and never had a bill over $100. I missed my regular appointment due to COVID closure and rescheduled 3 months later. They recommended $1,750 worth of treatment. Deep cleaning, some sonic shite, replace a filling I’ve had for 20 years.

Dentist said no cavities so I told them I’d reschedule the cleaning. After I left I thought about it more and pissed me off. Never rescheduled and not going back. Moving on to a new dentist.

Dentist go to "seminars" to teach them how to make more money. They upsell you on all kinds of things and preventative measures. If you are being upsold, you are being scammed. I had a deep filling in one molar, had pain a few days after so I went back to the dentist. He said, it could be the filling or it could be wisdom teeth, recommended pulling my wisdom teeth. I chose to go with a medicated filling, still have my wisdom teeth and changed dentist.

It's def a real problem. Pediatric dentists are the absolute worst about it. If you have a kid that gets diagnosed with a cavity by a pediatric dentist, take the kid to a non pediatric dentist. better than a 50% chance it was bs. word has been getting around about this.

Knew a guy who was sitting in the chair having dental work done. One of the dentist's friends, who was also a dentist, called him and he was talking to the guy on speaker phone while he worked on my friend's teeth. The dentist on speaker phone asked him if he was going to the big conference in Vegas. He said, "no, I'm remodeling the house right now so money is a little tight". The other dentist said, "just tell someone they need a root canal...that's xxx dollars". The dentist working on my friend suddenly got flustered and said "You're on speaker phone and I'm with a patient". The he apologized to my friend for having to hear that and said "we don't do that here".

They showed me some pictures and said see this dark spot and that one, didn't look like the old cavities.

Recommended 4 fillings due to these "dark spots" and one he had had fallen out so 5 in all for $1,400.

This is to get him ready for braces which costs $6,000 and he 's 13 so he will need a car in three years with insurance

If you don’t understand or are concerned with your bill, there's absolutely nothing wrong with asking someone at the office to go over each charge with you.

I did it with my root canal.

I switched to a new dentist about 15 years ago. Every time I went to him I had a cavity. I never felt it or was in any pain. After about 6 or 7 cavities he moved to a new location. I didn't think anything of it, but did get a new dentist.

15 years later and I have never had another cavity. I really suspect that dentist was drilling on my grill for the money only.
