Just look at the response of the nation to regions affected by natural disasters
I have to believe the response by armed able and willing citizens, with some form of coordination, would have any invading force surrounded by 500k patriots and National Guard from every corner of the United States within 48 hrs.

People on this website has a strange fixation on ideas that the south is the only armed area of the country. This might blow your mind but there are rural areas all along the west coast. California also has heavily conservative areas as well. Uhh yeah. Why do people think NYC = ny state? I've lived in NY and PA - Outside of those cities everyone owns guns. I have a hard time getting people to play softball during the week lately because of bow season. My gf's brother in law is from Pittsburgh and is probably the biggest redneck I've ever met.
The east coast has plenty of people that are "southern" or at least have southern sensibilities

It's hard to say you can eliminate certain things, because there are systems in place that the normal average US Citizen has no clue about. Not just military, but comms, logistics, etc.
With that being said. As many others have pointed out, the Rockies would be a huge cock block and well if they wanted to go through the desert we could always do a nuclear test in real time :) .

Due to advanced weapon technology, I don't see any country being able to successfully invade the US for the foreseeable future. If they were, however, a true occupation outside of major cities would prove near impossible. In rural areas there would be enough weapons, ammo, and civilians with a will to fight and knowledge of the terrain to inflict massive casualties on an occupation force. Places like the Appalachians and the Rockies, or the swamps of the southeast, or any moderately wooded area would neutralize a lot of an army's technological advantages and provide excellent cover for guerrilla fighters.
In theory it could be done but it would be very costly and a major headache for whoever decided to try.

The scenario where the US is invaded would take a large Axis of powers. Even Russia at their peak couldn't have done a D-Day operation on the US. This isn't crossing the channel getting here. Unless they came from near by. That was a fear in the 60's with Cuba and fears of troops hitting Florida.
In reality our Navy is so massive, I doubt anything could get close. Only way would be to use civilian shipping to near by countries.
(I read a lot of Alt-History books. Must have read a dozen American invasion books)
