How successful would a country be invading the U.S.?

Let's assume a country like Russia, China, or N Korea invaded the West coast. How far would they advance inland? How many Cities would they capture? How many casualties?
My thought- if we are invaded from the west, the enemy would have an "easier" time taking cities. The East coast seems like a tougher challenge. More populated and the Southern states on the east coast would probably put up a bigger fight than places like San Fran.
Thoughts?
Edit- let's also assume it's a surprise attack and the U.S. Navy on the west coast has been nuetralized. Just strictly Land war.

Depends on where they strike.
Up the Mississippi didn't work too well in the past and wouldn't work this time either.

Hopefully we're smart like the Swiss and have doomsday plans in place to destroy any and all bridges/roads/tunnels thru the Rockies.

My thought is you don't know anything about California. The West Coast states are pretty well armed, and the geography on top of that would stop them quickly. Yes there are Hollywood liberal pussies, but they don't speak for the people over there who like to hunt.

The US has never been invaded which is actually shocking. With that said, countries go to war to take power over resources. The US really doesn't possess a ton of monetary gain from a standpoint of land or strategic territorial power.

Another country's military trying to forcefully invade doesn't reach land. They'll slowly come through the Mexican border.

Here's how it would go:
1) Foreign enemy decides to invade America.
2) Vastly superior US military obliterates any forces that get within 100 miles (if that close) to the coast.
The end.
Considering your edit - if they DID make it to the land, then our national guard would be deployed. Our police have military grade weapons. And the populace is heavily armed, though I think outside of the Midwest, South, and Texas, this would be overrated.
Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle are too big to occupy. A good laugh thinking they'd take San Diego. Maybe they get through Oregon, but the terrain is difficult.
Then what? Traverse the fricking desert or Rocky Mountains?
East coast is heavily populated and too big to occupy any major cities. Lots of military presence there as well. The South will shoot them on sight. Florida has weather and terrain issues.
Probably best case is to somehow get through Canada into Wisconsin or Michigan. Secure the lakes. Launch an offensive to cut off Chicago, Detroit, and Buffalo.
