I started with a Motorola flip phone in 97, and then graduated to a Nokia. Had x amount of minutes, after 9 was unlimited lol. And roaming happened often and costed extra

I got my first one in 2001, when I was 23. Only got it because of was delivering pizzas at the time.

In my early 20s. Probably around 1996. I paid for it myself. Granted, cell phones weren't mainstream at all when I was growing up. I did have a beeper in HS though

I was 18 and only got one because I was a freshman at LSU and my parents wanted me to call home every now and then.
