How much should phone calls cost at OPP?

LINK
(Not sure what happened with that link... whoops)
Seems like this is middle ground. Some places it is free, some places, it costs more.
Jail is for punishment. But it's well proven that staying connected to the community helps reduce recidivism.
I'm not sure free is the answer... but perhaps at cost is the answer. I'm not surprised that this company is contributing money to Gusman's campaign.
Also, whatever happened to calls from jail being collect calls? And do the inmates have to pay for calls to their attorneys?

When people locked up in the New Orleans jail call their loved ones, the costs add up fast. Phone calls are 21 cents a minute, according to the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff was laying out the traditional argument from jail officials around the country who rely on commissions from private phone providers to help fill out budgets. In the case of the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office, the agency has a contract with prison phone industry giant Securus. It's one of two companies that dominate the field, and both give widely to law enforcement officials’ campaign accounts. Securus and its employees have donated at least $11,750 to Gusman’s election war chest since 2011.
Under the terms of its contract with the Sheriff’s Office, Securus sends an 86% commission on calls to the Sheriff’s Office. In 2018, that amounted to $973,000, according to public records from the Sheriff’s Office. As the jail’s population declined during the pandemic last year, the revenue dropped to $773,000.

If everything is a link, is anything really a link?

Why do you care so much about a city you don’t live or work in? Your obsession with NOLA is weird.

Holy hyperlink.
Phone calls should be at cost. So, what, maybe $0.01/minute? Assuming local calls that are not costing the jail more than the line and equipment, there’s no reason for it to be a profit center.

I live one parish over and have a lot of vested interest in the metro area.

Everyone in jail has been convicted of a crime?

Is everyone convicted at this facility? If not, seems silly to punish everyone... including the possibly not guilty.

It’s different these days. The people on the outside have to put money in the account for the inmate to call them. So it’s basically a pre-pay but the inmate can only use it to call the person that put the money on that account.

I'm not sure if the rules are separate for those awaiting trial.

90 percent of my fellow parish citizens would be perfectly happy if everything west of the Barracks was nuked.
10 percent of us understand that we are part of a larger area, and how the larger area goes, determines a lot of how of we go.

If you don’t want to $$$ to make a call, I’m sure you can make arraignments with some of the locales to use their cell phones

Fun fact:
Former St Tammany Sheriff Mike Strain’s daughter owned BOTH the phone company and the commissary (where you buy food/snacks/toiletries/etc) for the St Tammany parish jail. They made millions.
Hope he gets what’s coming to him.
