Dealership charged me $130 just to run the diagnostic test on my vehicle. They wants another $580 to repair the faulty part (which is not crucial to the function of the vehicle, it’s a gas cap malfunction) That includes parts, labor, and taxes.

If I take this to a mechanic will they typically be cheaper than what the dealership will charge?

About 100%. Seriously. GM dealer wanted $1300 to replace brake master cylinder. Brought to another mechanic and they did it for $700

If you know it’s the gas cap, order the part and screw it in

A gas cap malfunction is often a bad charcoal canister.
They aren't that labor intensive. You'll save well going to a regular mechanic.

It’s often referred to as a stealership. I do pretty much all of my maintenance and repairs. Had to bite the bullet and get my wife’s ride worked on. It was something with the brakes and I just couldn’t get it fixed. $850 later even at a local shop I was wishing I had watched a little more YouTube. It needed calipers and new pads.

They will tell you the code numbers and their definitions. Diagnosing the problem is not the same thing -at all.

Dealerships have significantly more cost associated with their business vs body shops / mechanics. This matters. Dealerships also have shite tons of work they have to do under warranty.... they charge more for everything else to try and offset that cost.

Take it somewhere else unless you have a very good reason for going to the dealership.

The code number says it's an O2 sensor, but the diagnosis at the dealership says it's the Johnson rod. I guess it was worth $130 to have it read at the dealership. Thanks for your advice.

I won’t let dealerships touch my vehicle unless it’s an issue I have while still under warranty. They charge way too much. Many of them will try to tell you that you need more done than you actually do.
