There was a thread last year on the money board about "how much do you spend eating out?" someone mentioned they spend, I think, 500. Small family.
My reply was " "
Then I started tracking it for a few months......
Yeah, you can run through $500 pretty fast with a family.

shite adds up quick especially if you throw in just one or two rounds of drinks per dinner

$300. Separate accounts.

I guess it depends on what you consider discretionary. We don't go out often but we do drink daily, cook good meals without skimping on ingredients, eat about half of our lunches out, and have two kids (12 & 17) which are constantly asking for money to do this or that. Maybe $3-4k/mo?
I don't sweat it too much. I'm happy with what we're putting away for retirement and have savings, live in a modest home for our income, and have a solid income. If none of that were true I'd probably more cognizant of what we spend but I'm fairly happy with where we're at and not going to eat beans and rice just to have even more money when we're old.
All that said, if you're young and maybe not established in a solid career, watching discretionary spending is super important. My wife and I haven't always lived like we are now. Strict budgeting is imperative when you're in your early earning years. Budgeting remains important later in life, just perhaps not as strictly.

We budget about 3 a month but it usually ends up being closer to 5. 0 fricks given.

Eating out adds up.. And it's so easy to do that you don't really realize how much you are spending... And if you go out somewhere.. 2, 3 times a week and both of you drink 2 or 3 beers, that's what gets you... 6 beers in a restaurant alone.. Will cost $25-$30

Another contributing factor is every one of my guy friends in our friend group either works offshore on a set schedule or they’re pilots for private plane owners so their schedules are way different than my job so they like to go to dinner during weekdays because they’re either off or not flying the next day.

I guess it depends where "discretionary" spending starts and ends. I eat our a lot and pay for a lot of fun things...probably $1500-2000 per month if I had to guess.
However, I save a tremendous amount and will not be changing my lifestyle any time soon.

I stopped worrying about money 6 years ago. It comes and goes.
Poor people bitch about not having money and ways to gain money. It's annoying.
Wealthy people talk about how to gain more money. It's annoying.
People in the middle live their life happily.

Amazes me that people can put that kind of debt on their credit cards and pay interest on it all. Such an elementary concept to always pay off your full balance every month.

who said anything about paying interest?

The guy who said he had $40k on his cards.

I thank him for getting me a free vacation every year from points.

What would be my discretionary spending is mostly moved to investments and a separate savings account.
You're amazed at how much you spend on eating out. I'm amazed at how much we spend on ordinary grocery purchases with three kids. I make a very good salary bit it seems to go vastly to the mundane.

Bills: 3205
Savings: 2020
Spending: 600
This is based on a very detailed breakdown that includes literally everything right down to things like toll tag, vehicle gas, dogs flea medicine and auto maintenance.

Don’t know and I’m not checking. Leave that stone unturned

Around 1,000 or so a month.

About a grand. I budget in $300 a month for “fun money.” But, my budget also allows for $1,200 extra each month.

It really depends on your income and size of family in addition to debts.

I've spent $4,877 on just ebay since Jan 1
