I should diversify from the 529. I have 6 years left, so it’s time.

$14000 $3500x4 wife is university professor so free tuition but I want kids room for a study so we will pay for dorms. He can pay for his own meal plan or eat his Dads Cajun food.

If you don't have a Roth IRA or haven't maxed out your contribution, that is a good vehicle to save for college. One of the eligible withdraw options is college tuition. If your kid gets a scholarship and you don't need it all then it is extra retirement money.

I’m about to roll over my last job’s 401 into a Roth, anything special I have to do to access that for his school?

Which schools still have dorms that cheap? I thought they were all sort of spiraling out of control everywhere.

We are doing 50k per kid regardless of what school they choose. They go in state and make money from us. They go to some fancy school, they better find some scholarships.

If you start at or near birth, $75k is within reach without feeling any pain. That way they can go to pretty much any state school or have a good start on a private.

That’s what I’m shooting for. Not sure if I’ll get there for all 3. It won’t pay for everything, but between that and whatever job the boy has, the debt should be manageable.

I’m also trying to re-fi my mortgage so it rolls off right around when the first starts college & hopefully have about 5 years of work after the youngest one finishes to get ready for retirement.

J/k. I’m in oil and gas so I’ll be drunk and penniless in a gutter within the year

my advice, and I've put three kids(and a bunch of lawyer's kids,) through college, is to have a contingency fund, that the kids have no idea exists, to supplement, if necessary, what they are unable to earn through scholarships, grants, money saved, and shortfalls in budget during college, it will not go as well if they think "dad's got this, it's party time," make them set their goals/budgets now, with little to no expectations of assistance from you and they'll be better prepared, and that's as valuable as just about anything else they'll learn in college
