How much faith do you have in customer reviews?

As Ive gotten older, I find that I read reviews a lot more before buying something than I used to.

I start with the most recent reviews and make my way to reading the lowest rated reviews.
I'm fully aware that some people just like to bitch about stuff and that most are more likely to leave a negative review before leaving a positive one.

I look for similarities in comments and throw out the outliers.

I start with the 3 star reviews then check the 4 and 2’s.

Fives and Ones either work for the company or are the competitors.

I usually read them but pay more attention to the 2 and 3 star reviews than the 1 star. You'll have people give a 1 star review because UPS damaged their package or they didn't understand what they were buying.

Use mobile Amazon and switch views to most recent. For a small purchase skim the first 15 for a bigger purchase a good more amount. You can get a good idea from that.

A lot of google reviews are fake. Especially if you see something like 200+ 5* reviews and zero reviews 5* or less.

I have rented out places on Airbnb and vrbo over the last 20 years, and those are pretty foolproof as far as fake reviews go.

But even in the realm of 100% legit reviews (as in, the reviewer actually bought and used the product “as intended”), people’s perceptions, opinions, and attitudes vary widely. (Hence the good advice above of tossing or underweighting outliers.)

“Perfect place for my family and me! Quiet, private, clean. We loved the pool, and the owner was so nice and communicative. Incredible value too. Wish it had a spaghetti strainer.” (True story.) 4 stars. 4 stars in Airbnb world is not good.

Then someone else will have had a clogged toilet, the power go out, and the housekeeper leave a murder weapon under the bed. 5 stars.
(That’s what I usually leave unless there’s a misrepresentation or it’s just disgusting.)

I once wanted to buy some jeans online. It had a single one star review. The review said:

Don’t buy these if your son doesn’t like pants.

I look at volume and ratio. I will pick a 4.5 rating based on 5000 reviews, over a 5.0 based on 12 reviews. I rarely read the reviews themselves, unless I am looking for something in particular regarding the product.

Im completely opposite. I will take the time to write a nice review if I have gotten a quality product and/or exceptional customer service. I figure it is the least I can do if I catch the rare (these days) company/employee or product that takes a little extra care in their product or service.

If I get a shite experience or product, I'm just done. I'll cut my losses and move on rather than waste my time writing a review for them.

I usually look at the 1 and 2 star reviews to see if I can live with the negative issues.

I used to rely on YouTube reviews but now every swinging dick gets the product for free so it’s biased.

I gave a 1 * star review after the Amazon delivery person drove across my lawn.

I saw a review for a BBQ place in Kansas City that said: "the waitresses killed my brother".
