Dealing with flowmeters every day will make you realize 10% is tough to maintain over time.

Sometimes I'll fill up and it will be 16.5-17 gallons. Sometimes it will be over 18. Makes no sense
What? Do you leave the same residual in your tank everytime? Are you certain your vehicle's gauge is accurate and consistent in various conditions?

I don't know about gas pumps, but once upon a time when I was the judge of a science far, I saw a kid check the accuracy of old school analog parking meters. They were wildly inaccurate. He went pretty far with his project and even got coverage in the local paper. The city got a bit of a black eye and ended up replacing/recalibrating a bunch of them because of it.

The Weights and measurements of the Department of Ag periodically do surprise checks on the pumps to make sure you are getting what you paid for in terms of the actual gas and that a gallon is a gallon.
They also check that all scales are registered and accurately calibrated.
Look for the stickers on the pumps and on scales at stores.

.128 oz.

Let's say it's actually .3% less. .03 x .128 oz = .00384 oz

Gas right now is $2.26 per gallon. 128 oz in one gallon. .00384 oz is 0.00003 gallons

That's $0.0000678 per gallon difference. Avg US gas tank is 12-16 gallons. let's say 16 gallons. That would be ~$0.0011 per fill up

About 40M Americans fill up their vehicles per day. Louisiana comprises 1.4% of the US population. That's 560k fill ups per day.

That comes out to $616 a day in error. Over a year that's about $225k.

I audit very large public companies. On many of my jobs $225k is FAR under what we call the clearly trivial threshold. That's 2 levels below what we consider material. That means it's such a small amount that we don't even consider it when we are looking at numbers. Literally nobody gives a frick about 225k in the grand scheme of things.

I did this quickly, my math may be wrong, please correct me.

If you want, you can redistribute it to the taxpayer. That'll get everyone a nice check of about $0.50 every year.

A while back there was a ring of gas station owners who were busted for gaming the system when it comes to state testing of the gas pumps.

The state would test at a set amount of gallons. Like they would test for one gallon to make sure it was accurate. Then they'd test for 5 gallons.

The gas station owners were able to hack the gas pumps to where they would accurately dispense one gallon of gas and 5 gallons of gas. But any amount outside those two amounts would be wildly inaccurate.

I usually tell the person next to me at the pump to use his/her hose to put a gallon of gas in my car before I start. You always need to ensure you're getting what you're paying for.

I'm innovative like that.

don't know about that, but I saw a sticker on a pump recently that said it was a federal crime to pump less than 4 gallons (or something to that effect).

That's the Indian gas station owner making up some bullshite to try to scare people into spending enough per transaction to not be impacted by credit card fees.

We actually did a Science Fair project on it once and determined that they ARE accurate

Roughly, yes. But I’ve noticed inconsistency in the amount that goes into my car at various gas stations. Exxons tend to be higher numbers than other places.

I filled up at a shady looking place a few years ago. Got 29 gallons.

My truck has a 26 gallon tank. And it was not on empty, but was in the red.

It's not bullshite, idiot. Debit card transactions were set at 21 cents plus a percentage of the transaction. If a gas station owner gets about a 3% profit on gasoline, and you buy two gallons, he is paying you to get gas. Because of the Durbin amendment to Dodd Frank, this is why you see stores demand minimum amounts on transactions around 2010. Your government, "protecting" you.

I purchased my own well and started refining oil to ensure I don’t lose a penny at the pump.

Well all you can do is trust the government to keep them honest and look what trusting the government gets you.

I am sure they shave it down as much as they can get away with.

Actually I fill a lot of gas cans for equipment at home and the pumps seem to be legit.

Now, I have had two different people who have worked in convenience store management who have told me never to pay for the high octane gas on a pump that dispenses all three grades out of the same nozzle.

What’s a penny right? Not much until you add it up. According to Google there are 285,000,000 registered vehicles in the US, and if that were to happen once a month to each vehicle, that’s 285,000,000 x .12 a year for an extra $34.2 million a year in their coffers. Thats no small change.
