Hope your recovery is going well, brother. Hit me up on here anytime if you feel that you need someone to talk you through a dark time. It's not really something that most people can tackle alone. It takes a strong support system.

If you have to ask the question, you already know the answer.

You don’t have to drink everyday to be an alcoholic. Good baseline is if you’re powerless or life is unmanageable.

12-27-87 ... 31 yrs living one day at a time

I was a HS State champion in wrestling and won 5 tournaments my Senior year. Had multiple college scholarship offers; however, I knew I couldn’t pass a drug test. I went to LSU so I could party like a rock star. Lasted 3 semesters as I did every drug that was offered to me and should have died on multiple occasions. After realizing my life was a train wreck, I checked myself into treatment when I was 19 yrs old. Been sober ever since as God had a plan for me. Ive shared my testimony with lots of strangers hoping to make a difference and save someone’s life.

Quit drinking right after Mardi Gras cause I was having major surgery in April. Haven’t had a sip of alcohol since but once I’m healed, I won’t completely quit. Definitely won’t be drinking like I used to and maybe have a beer or two or a few glasses of wine with dinner.

You don't have to goto rehab. You can just goto a psychologist and/or narcotics anonymous. I found that I was using Oxycontin, Roxys, Opana, Vicoden, Percocet, Vicodin, Loratab and Lorcet to ease pain and curb my anger. I had to do court appointed counseling and I applied it to both my anger and drug abuse. Turns out I learned that I was using the drugs to numb the pain and anger. Of course everyone is different, but it really worked for me.

Even the guy right below you with 30 years only had a month in the beginning. One day at a time is really one day at a time. You can do it.

Can I ask how you handled the withdrawal symptoms? The night sweats/shivers, constant nausea, and anxiety are killing me. I slept last night off and on, best night so far but still crappy.

It is amazing/shocking to me whenever these discussions come up how many folks on here have addiction issues.

What I can never understand is how some of you still dealing with it can plainly see life slipping away, yet are not able or willing to make a change until "rock bottom."

I do not mean that at all as an insult or condemnation, I just find it very difficult to comprehend.

I had 18 months twice and went back out.

Some days I do find myself contemplating a drink or a pill.

It’s usually when I’m depressed and start getting in self-pity mode.

It feels good to get a buzz. That’s the first temptation.

The second issue is the delusion that I’ll be able to control my drinking/drugs this time around.

That’s where they get the phrase, “drink/use like a gentleman.”

Honestmy, I was lucky and didn't have much of those. But, a few things that help me the best are Trazodone (not addicitve), Xanax, benadryl and melatonin. I think if you told your doctor that you were having trouble sleeping that you would have no trouble getting trazedone. It can make a little groggy in the morning, but not as bad as benadryl. Melatonin is over the counter at any drug store or pharmacy. Albertsons sometimes has a 2 for 1 and Costco had a really good price on them.

My personal best way to get over any anxiety over going back to drugs is excercise. It seriously saved my life. I got addicted to that instead and it released all of my stress and anxiety.

My last time getting wasted was at a friend's house and his kids kept asking what was wrong with the uncle. I feel asleep on the road multiple times on my way home. My daughter was at the neighbors house. I went to get her and she said I couldn't get the key in the door and I scared the shite out of her so bad she called my sister to come pick her up. She was only 10 years old. I ended taking an ice cold shower and was still hot, fell asleep in my bed fully clothed with my feet on the floor with all of the lights on, tv on and never fed my dogs or let them outside. I never touched the stuff again. That was absolutely rock bottom for me.

I eat because I'm unhappy

And I'm unhappy because I eat

It's a viscious cycle

You cocaine and alcohol people have it easy. Try being told that you need to have your bit every day in order to survive.
