What I can never understand is how some of you still dealing with it can plainly see life slipping away, yet are not able or willing to make a change until "rock bottom."
First off “rock bottom” is different for everyone. For example, it got so bad for me that I almost died, and after, drank the first day I was released from the hospital with my jaw wired shut. I have so many stories that end horribly but when my family started to pull away, that was my “rock bottom.”
People addicted to substances have the same part of the brain affected that tells a human survival instincts like food, shelter, water, etc. When you see someone so bad but can’t put the bottle down, they have no more an idea why they can’t than you do. That person honestly thinks they’ll need the substance or they might die. And for some, that’s medically true. I knew a guy that quit drinking whiskey cold turkey. He died within a week. It’s important to remember that you “normal” people don’t have those same will power issues.

find it very difficult to comprehend.
And I can’t comprehend how people can drink one or two then stop. Or leave a glass of wine with some left in it. When I start, there’s no off switch. I’ll drink until the law or biology stops me.

It's a viscious cycle
Want to know a vicious cycle? Trying drinking constantly until you’re a belligerent idiot. You wake up the next day so guilt-ridden about what you did, what you said, how you acted, that you drink to take the remorse away.
Then it happens all over again.

No sir
That is the definition of insanity.....doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results
