re: How many of you went to summer camp as a kid? Not day camp, but go away for a few weeks?

Camp Avondale 2-3 times for Scouts. Think it was three but I am getting old.

Perhaps a better question is who went to Mr Wonders camp?

Crazy how close that guy came to getting away with it. His only mistake was basically contacting the authorities and asking if he'd gotten away with it. Mind-boggling. He's supposedly pretty well-off, too.

I did once. It was a really "great" experience.

My mom packed for me. Back then we had a these huge hard sided suitcases. I was either 8 or 9. I think my suitcase weighed somewhere around 189 lbs. I was all of around 60. I had no chance of being able to carry that damned thing and one of the counselors had to carry mine. Huge boost of confidence as I'm walking to our campsite for the 1st time.

1st night a tornado tore through the camp. Didn't hurt anything where I was and no one got hurt but did tear up some stuff really bad. Was also pretty terrifying as a 8 or 9 year old sitting out in the woods in a tent.

Also, Parents were suppose to send the kids mail. My parents never did. So, every morning as kids where standing out waiting for letters from home, I got nothing.

Lastly, there were scorpions everywhere. We had to check our sleeping bags every day. One of the last days I had one in mine. As a kid that had no idea that scorpions would not kill you instantly if they stung you, I was terrified and didn't sleep at all that night.

Alpine summer camp.
Somewhere in Northern Alabama.
Still there up on Lookout Mountain. Near DeSoto Falls

Our first year we (pile of kids from Jackson, MS) took the train up to Fort Payne. Easily the best memory of the 3 years I went up there.

We used to go to Camp Hardtner in Pollock, LA every year. Not sure if it's still there but it was major fun for this Episcopal (at the time) boy. 4 square and canteen cards along with canoeing and endless 'Sharks and minnows' and capture the flag.

Times were so much better back then.

Myself, usually 2-3 different one week long camps but never much longer. I don’t even recall anyone I knew going to any longer than a week or so despite all the 80s movies depicting these weeks-long summer camps.

Oldest kid went to one week-long camp.

The super long ones always seemed kinda weird at least for younger kids but by jr high I probably would have loved it.

Too poor growing up.

We were allowed to go camping by ourselves if we wanted to and to stay outside all day.

I miss the 90s.

I went to Summer camp when I was 8 and 12. I had a lot of fun. I will always remember it. One was through the YMCA and the other my local church group. So many cool activities that I am sure are now illegal or not in vogue with the times.

Always wanted to, but summer was my time to mow the lawn, weed the garden and shite like that. No way the old man would send his slave labor off to camp.

avondale

Indian Village- can’t recall the names of the three tribes. I was on camp staff for four summers. Lots of fun. The mile swim, wood badge hill, possum trot trail. This was long ago.

Going to church camp every summer was usually the highlight of my summer. Always tons of fun, good food, out in the middle of the woods somewhere, and met all kinds of people, and some end up being friends for life. Camp Smiling Acres in Greensburg, LA. Camp Maywood in Hamilton, AL. Gulf Coast Bible Camp in Lucedale, MS. Actually spent this past weekend with some of my friends from church camp. Nothing like reminiscing on all the funny things and trouble we use to get into.

Same here. Was always a blast. And those female camp counselors went from irl4 to OT11 a couple of days in. Literally the only reason anyone took rowing, lol.

I think I took swimming or lifesaving every year. It was the best way to guarantee extra time in the lake. Rifle was fun too.

The only other away summer camp I went to was Camp Abbey in Covington one year. It sucked because most the boys were regulars and already had tight knit cliques.
