My boys go to Boy Scout camp - they travel to various places - this year they just went to camp Avondale here in the BR area

My husband used to go to Boy Scout camp too

I went to different overnight sports camps growing up but nothing traditional

I went to summer camp in Wisconsin as a kid. Red Arrow for a couple years. 7 weeks and loved every minute of it!

Yep. 4 week sessions for several summers as a camper, then went for 8 weeks a number of times as a counselor. Very traditional boys camp in TN with log cabins. Activities were horseback, archery, riflery, crafts, woodworking, tennis, boating and swimming. Great time. My kids went too. It's important to disconnect from the world and shut out all the noise, especially now.

Many, many years ago I’d go to KC Camp.
Was somewhere on the North Shore.

Ha ! There was no such thing in my youth. Grateful I was in a position to send all four every year until they outgrew the camps.

Tunica was one, I think. Red, yellow, green.

The mile swim,

I wonder how that would be received today? A rowboat 1/4 mile from the dock in a typical south LA lake with visibility of 3 inches…swim there and back twice. Maybe I don’t remember it exactly.

KoolAid was called bug juice and there was a boundary around the little general store. If you were caught with a soft drink outside the boundary, you had to buy one for the person who caught you. The old canvas tents with cot mattresses that were probably pulled out of the dumpster at Angola. Merit badges by day, mayhem by night. Fun times.

Following.

Great topic. I think my daughter would enjoy something like this based on the limited info I have seen others post about their kids attendance on FB.

Hoping others from Louisiana area can offer recommendations for camps that are relatively close to the Baton Rouge area.

Went to Carbide Camp, as in Union Carbide, as a kid in WV. I was 8 years old around 1981. I believe I was there for two weeks, maybe more. We had cabins with bunk beds and a counselor assigned to each cabin. They had a boys camp and girls camp. We had Horseback riding, archery, BB guns (aka riflery), arts and crafts, had a pool on site, graveyard "ghost" hikes, camp fires where the counselors would play guitar and sing songs. That's where I first heard Cats in the Cradle. Had a huge game of war/capture the flag with the other camp. Gift packages from your parents. I went there with another kid and he left after like the first day. It was pretty much like every summer camp movie you watched growing up. Minus Camp Crystal Lake. One of the best times of my childhood looking back.
