4 auto in the rain otherwise maybe a couple times a year during hunting season
Is this advisable? I never heard of it but it seems from this thread that it is common. I have a 4wd for the last 37 years and never did it but it kind of makes sense....

This is a major factor. From another thread today I got some info and looked at used trucks on line. Most of them were dealer trucks. The 2 WD version is almost non existent and are actually about the same price or less than the 4wd version but in my experience you can't hardly give a late model 2 wd picuk up away.

Most people own pickup trucks don’t even use it as a “truck” but a few times a year

I use 4-LO every time I pull my boat out. Used 4-LO earlier this week trying to pull a stump out the yard. Weather and weak rope beat me but I'll be back.
If it can be removed with a pick up truck and a rope it can probably be dug out with two shovels full of dirt LOL. Unless its a planted tree or shrub of course.

I’ll take it if you can’t find anyone…

I have three of them. 4x4 once a month to keep everything moving in the Spring, Fall, and Summer. Winter they get used about 5-7 days out of the month.

At least a few times a week on the farm

I use mine every time there's a North Texas Icepocaylpse or when I haul my travel trailer out onto loose beach sand....which is a few times a year.
My family and I fricked around and went on vacation in Daytona a few years ago during some sort of Carolina Squatted truck convention....damned things were EVERYWHERE. I was in my crew cab 8 foot bed 3500 GMC. I helped those squatted trucks out of holes on the beach more times than I could count. I drove past about 8 of them trying to get one unstuck and heard one of them say "how is that old man still moving and we're stuck" LOL. I stopped and asked them if they needed any help. They were a friendly lot and said if I had any ideas that they were about done. I looked the situation over, climbed in the stuck truck, told them to unhitch all of the chains and ropes and move out of the way...and I locked the transfer case into 4 high and idled that truck right out of the sand without turning over a tire LOL. Push button GM transfer case. Was in 2wd. Those youngsters thought I was some sort of evil magician...none of them had checked and the one who owned the truck probably did not know or thought he had locked the transfer case. I told them it was about the throttle but I did tell the owner that it had "slipped" out of 4wd and all I did was engaged the transfer case....I can only imagine the shite he'd have taken had I told all of them what was wrong. Hopped in my big old stock old man truck and drove off down the beach. For the whole weekend when any of them from that group saw us they went out their way to say hello LOL.

Actually use it surprisingly often on mine. Maybe only twice a year on my wife’s SUV.
But I will become the primary driver of her SUV when she gets tired of it and then it will see some more frequent 4x4 use. That’s how we rotate the use of our vehicles. And that’s why our cars always have 4x4.
Now what we don’t use very often is the low range. I could probably go without that in the next vehicle.

It's damn nice to drive a vehicle and have the confidence to know beyond any doubt that it will take me anywhere I need to go without any issues.
Ain't ever been my experience with a vehicle of any sort LOL. I can get them bad stuck with almost no effort 4wd or not. The best offroad vehicle I ever owned was a 1996 tahoe 1500. It was almost as good offroad as a jeep and could haul a helluva lot more. It did get stuck a few times though. I had a 1984 tacoma for a while and those things are like jeeps and maybe better and I did not have much trouble at all getting it stuck. Mostly it was due to me doing shite I ought not to have been doing but when there is a fishing hole or a hot duck blind I sometimes lose sight of what is a good idea....

I can see how one mishap there could sell that 4x4 option.

Why would anyone buy a 4x4 if they would never use it?
I rarely use mine, but when I bought it, I was working in a place where getting stuck was a constant possibility, and I had to be very cautious with my previous vehicle. About 2 months after I bought it, I ended up working elsewhere, hence why I rarely use it. It has come in handy on some wet boat ramps, once or twice.

Yes its a scrubby tree I cut down a couple months ago, the root ball is halfway under the A/C pad outdoors. Not saying it can't be shoveled but I try to work smarter.
The rope was replaced with 1/2" static line looped 4x. The tires will spin before the rope pops this time.

I only own 4x4s. How many times have I used 4x4 in the last year? No idea. A lot though. Try spending 10-15 days in the back country of Colorado in October without it and get back to me.
Hell, 1/2 the time I’m in 4 wheel AND have chains on all four wheels.
