My dad paid for mine. I graduated before tops existed but tuition was also like $1200 per semester back then too

I had pretty much all of my school stuff paid for. TOPS covered tuition plus the $400 stipend. Then the scholarship covered all of the fees they tack on. I never lived on campus, but room and food wasn't offered to me anyway. So pretty much all expenses outside of school.

Okay, that isn't bad at all. Most don't score that high on the ACT and have straight A's. It definitely helps. Did you work any while in school?

Part time the entire time except my first semester and full time in the summers.

Well, it seems to me you took care of business. Look, the costs now are ridiculously stupid, I know. I have 3 in college now.

My parents didn't give me a dime for college. They provided me with free food when I came home on the weekends, though.

TOPS and my Tiger Band Stipend covered the vast majority, but my parents picked up the rest.

Tandy Business Products paid for my tuition while I worked full-time selling Trash-80's on Florida Blvd.

No student loans. Course, what was tuition back then, $500 / semester?

Took me a while, but I had a great time and always had $.

Did your parents pay for your college education? If not, did they pay for part of it?

My undergrad was covered by scholarships+TOPS. My parents gave me about 2k to help me when I started graduate school, it was a graduation gift for undergrad. I paid the rest of graduate school while working full time. I also paid for my wife's graduate school (her undergrad was covered with scholarships+TOPS). We were fortunate enough to graduate with two graduate degrees (a masters and a clinical doctorate) without student loans.

ETA: They did pay my expenses while I was in undergrad, though.

You mean the biggest cost of living? Is that what it only saved you?

My dad died and directed his life insurance payout to pay for my sisters and I's undergrad, so that was paid for. Then I received a full ride for law school.

Parents paid for my sister and I's college in full.

I had TOPS and they paid the rest, including rent, utilities, and vehicle; until we graduated.

I truly appreciate them doing this, and hope to reciprocate for my future kid.

Same for my wife, and she by no means came from a family with means. Her parents sacrificed so she and her sister could go to college and come out debt-free.

It was a wash considering the scholarship provided housing if I wanted. I just didn't want to live in the shitty dorms...lol

Neither my wife, nor I, had college paid for by our parents. Mine was paid for through a mixture of TOPS, scholarships, and working. I actually got a refund check from the school rather than me having to pay them. My wife's was through TOPS and student loans. We then worked hard to pay off her student loans within a year of graduating. It can be done and done without putting yourself through enormous debt. Also, I'm not gonna pressure my kids to go to college. It's not for everyone.

Also, you dont have to go to *insert big name school here*. There's much cheaper options with equally as good an education. I went to Southeastern over LSU because they paid me a ton more than LSU would to go there

Paying for tuition is not "throwing money at all their problems". Come on, man.... Can you say hyperbole?

I relent. That was a bit over-the-top. I was trying to make a point without getting too wordy. I've been accused of being long-winded.

quote:

You want your kids to be responsible? Show they by example. Show them that you started saving for their college a while back, and can pay their tuition because you, yourself, was responsible enough to prepare for this day. You wanna know what will speak volumes? That will. They will get that, and will do the same for their kids. Kids emulate mom and dad's actions.

While I agree with you here I think it's even more effective if they have to save for it themselves.

I guess as an effective compromise you can spend their whole life until 18 telling them that they have to save for their own College tuition while you are secretly putting away some money for them to supplement what they save. That way the lesson gets through to them and they won't come up short when it comes time to pay for college.

My wife and I plan on doing this for our kids and we've already started the only difference is that it's not going to be earmarked for college. They can use it in any way that furthers their ability to take care of themselves as an adult. That could be going to trade school, investing or starting a small business.

Best of Both Worlds.

My parents paid for everything. I make more than both of them combined. Not a brag as they weren't swimming in money. Just goes to show that I didn't need to earn the money myself to go above and beyond what they could provide. I was and am responsible for myself and they knew it. Funding me didn't change that. It no doubt made it easier for me and I am grateful to them for that.

You are the exception not the rule. You're probably a special person and you should be proud of that but most people don't fall into that category.
