No help.

Small scholarships, bartending, the occasional illegal side hustle, and student loans.

Don't regret it one bit.

I don’t know a single person who paid for it by themselves.
How could you? Most schools cost (and have for a long time) more than $20k per year. What teen can support themselves and also make that money?

There’s a number of schools that don’t allow you to go part time. My school didn’t. Unless your getting govt assistance or your student loaning the whole thing, a part time job isn’t gonna pay for most colleges.

That's why I'm still paying for mine...I even went out of state to get my degree. I did my first two years at an in state cc, then had to transfer out of state for my degree. I've been working full time as an engineer for 4 years now and making student loan payments.

Regardless if you have to do it on your own, as long as you choose a worthwhile degree, it'll be worth every penny once you finish.

Grant it, I got a loan for one semester, but I paid for grad school by myself.

I don't know anyone that paid for it on their own either--but I know plenty of people that didn't get help from mommy and daddy. There is nothing wrong with loans or scholarships if you really want it and is worth it (i.e., a degree you can get a good job with).

I agree with the other poster that said we need to stop acting like college and vo-tech are rights. They should not be impossible to get into for people that don't have rich mommies and daddies, but it shouldn't be an automatic that everyone goes either.

My parents paid half. I paid the other half.

Senior year I earned a full scholarship, so my parents were on the hook for 1.5 semesters. That’s not too bad, considering there was no TOPS then.

Grad school was mostly covered by scholarships, but I did have to take loans to cover some of it.

My parents paid. Tuition was $145/semester (18 units) in 1972 and had risen to $175/semester when I graduated in 1977. My dad didn't attend my graduation (you would thought he would, since he dropped out of school in the 9th grade during the depression).

Both my son's were accepted to USAFA and I didn't pay a penny for tuition (thank you tax payers) and they were paid a stipend every month.

Nope.

I paid for undergrad and grad school. I lived at home through undergrad and had a job I worked 30-35 hours a week. Had to move out for grad school and take out loans. My parents did help out by buying groceries and paying car insurance and things like that.

Also, this was in the 90s & 2000s, not 60s & 70s before people post that school was so cheap in those decades.

Early on we made a deal with our kids, 1 chance at college if they had the grades to get in, 1 car (not new) and 1 wedding. The next time for any would be on their dime. They kept their end of the deal and so did we.

My parents paid my undergraduate tuition and helped with housing after paying two years in the dorm. I paid my own law school and housing. Paid it off in about 16 years.

I took out loans, ended up with about 22k in debt after 4 years. Covered all of tuition and most of my living expenses.

They gave me money every couple of weeks. Basically whatever they could afford to give me, couple hundred here couple hundred there.

Grandmother often paid my apartment rent.

Took out the max amount loans that I could to cover tuition and books. Picked up a couple of academic scholarships in my last few years.

Worked part time at a few places for extra money - Golds gym, worlds gym, couple of restaurants. Then did two paid internships.

I lived in a nice apartment all 4 years of undergrad and year and a half of grad school. Always had enough money to do stuff and was never scraping up change for food. It was a group effort though.

My parents helped me get student loans then after a year I moved out of the dorms, got a job at tcby and lived with like 6 other people in a house.

Somehow I wasn't traumatized for life for this unfair treatment.

Oh yeah, graduated with about 20k in student loan debt. I made about 30k working I would guess over the 5 years at AU.

Good job after AU and paid off the loans within 3 yrs.

If they keep +3.0 cumulative, I cover Tuition, Books, Room & Board, Greek Bill, car, insurance, phone and laptop.

They cover most of their spending money with part time jobs.

Except for the addition of the phone and laptop, just like my parents did with me.

My parents paid for college but I have been "paying" for it for twenty years in the form of emotional blackmail by them holding it over my head. They expect that I still do what they say when it comes to career. They take credit for my accomplishments and success because they say I wouldn't have achieved them without them paying for college.

While I appreciate the gift they gave me, I wish I had done it on my own terms.

Every last dollar of it incl a new car, insurance, bills, rent, frick around money, whatever. I still had a part time job for about 2 years for whatever reason (I probably should have used that time to study instead).

I plan to do the same for my kids.

Mine was paid for by an Army ROTC scholarship. My mom was a single parent that would not have been able to afford college tuition.

I paid for undergraduate and graduate degree for my oldest. My youngest is graduating next year and I have paid for his college as well. It is worth it for them to start out their lives without crushing debt.

My parents were OT poor, so I had to pay my own way. It's not that hard really.
