sure, you could use it, back in the 50's, but people are built a lot differently.

By built differently you mean gotten a lot fatter, I agree. Howevee, the human skeletal system did not evolve in the last 60 years.

Disagree with what, exactly? It’s not a simple thing.

Surely you wouldn’t say that loss of muscle mass improves mortality rate in an otherwise normal person.

Weight training and strength gains improve mortality rates in most contexts. Sure, if you get stronger by blowing up to 300 lbs with a 40” waist, that’s a bad thing.
But that doesn’t mean a 6’ man is better off weighing 165 than 200 lbs, if he has almost no muscle mass at 165.

6' and 175 for me (technically 5'11.5 but guess I'm that guy).

Anyone skinnier than me needs to lift more weights and bulk up. Anyone bigger is a meathead or needs to lose weight. Sort of joking although this thread is full of similar statements. Everyone thinks anything that is bigger or smaller than them is inferior. Just like how everyone that works out regularly thinks their way is the best.

Mortality impacts, in order (non-smokers):

(1) Cardio health
(2) Waist circumference
(3) Body fat%
(4) Weight(BMI)

Of course these all can be related, it's impossible to run 5 miles/day, eat healthy, and have a BMI of 40.

The guy with the skinny arms and a noticeable beer belly who never works out, and has a low enough muscle mass to squeak by with a normal-ish BMI is more at risk of early death than a soft-in-the-middle active guy with decent muscle mass and elevated BMI.

Thanks for some actual science.

If you have a 34” waist and weigh 200 lbs, you are doing all right, I think, regardless of OPs chart.

You seem awfully hostile... Which is why I hate this thread topic.

Read Dr. Jason Fung and his studies on insulin levels vs caloric intake. If your insulin levels are high, you are going to store more fat. If your leptin and ghrelin levels are high, you will be hungry all the time and eat more.

You aren't a pot of water. Calories are not all absorbed and treated the same in the body...

and Fung has been proven to be a damn fraud. and he has no peer reviewed studies to back up his hypothesis because that is all it is, a hypothesis. Anybody can form a hypothesis, doesn't make it true. Anybody can setup a study to get the results they want, doesn't make it a good study. My point is, there are no peer reviewed studies that show this.

seriously i am not hostile, but you are wrong and it would serve you well to go read layne nortons site, he has all of the studies linked. Read martin berkhams new book lean gains, all the studies are in the book also.

watch this atleast.

I am 6’0 & 255 lbs. I have a 18.5” neck, 50” chest, 22” back & 38 waist. I ain’t European model skinny but no where near obese. Last time I did a hydrostatic analysis I was 21% body fat. If I get back to 225 lbs (my goal) I will be 49” chest & 34” to 36” waist. Personally think that is good for a 46 year old dude.
