What a laughable way to trivialize how much better Houston is than BR.

I’d bet you hate things about your personal life that you want to blame on where you live.

The wife and I are content here in NOLA. We live very comfortably here to say the least . Barring catastrophic event and the entire city goes underwater, we're here for at least into our 60's. We always joke about buying a coconut farm and moving to Thailand though.

It may be better for you, but it's not for me. The only thing Houston offers someone like me that BR doesn't is likely better job prospects. All the other problems BR has (crime, traffic, bad schools, high housing prices, shitty weather) Houston has in spades with almost none of the benefits (your family close by for holidays, all your favorite restaurants, your social group in close proximity, connections with social and professional groups, knowing literally every other person around you because you grew up with them, etc.) There are big advantages to being near where you grew up, and I damn sure am not going to give those up unless the place I'm going to offers some seriously big and unique advantages of its own. Houston doesn't offer that. It's just a giant hot-arse, spread-out, traffic clusterf&%k with pro sports franchises.

I don't live in Houston.

Texas has no state income tax. You can very easily avoid crime and high housing prices while also having some of the best schools in the area. Public schools, mind you.

Some people don't want to stay and die in one little bubble. And that's a strange overall priority list outside of proximity to family.

Lol baton rouge is this but smaller with no pro sports. The only advantage there is nostalgia and family reason.

Houston is a pretty solid place to be a single, mid 20s-30s professional. Can’t say I see any similarities between it and Baton Rouge if you are being specific to the inner loop area

If you don't have kids, do whatever you want. For the parents, I feel you owe it to your kids to give them more life experiences other than just LA. I know you can take vacations but actually living somewhere is different. LA doesn't have much to offer.

I left right after college and it's been 13 years and I haven't ever had the urge to move back. My brother is starting a new job outside of LA and I'm super happy that he's getting out.

I love Louisiana. It will always be home to me.

I don't love the terrain or the heat. I'd prefer to live near the mountains after my kid gets out of school.

Not sure if I'll be able to convince my wife though. She has no interest in leaving and she's not even from here.

Well I’ve never had the urge to live where you do. So suck on that.

And knowing everybody...and having a close group of friends I get to hangout with all the time. I mean, I can go into damn near any bar by myself and never feel alone or out of place because there will be people I know who I can talk to. And this isn't just BR but NOLA as well. I don't have to put myself out there to make new friends. I don't have to hustle to make professional connections as they're already made. I don't have to learn the short-cuts, search for the hidden gems, find reputable service providers, etc. I know everything I need to know about where I live and have a different buddy I can rely on for just about anything I need via the good ol' boy network.

I think you are trivializing the advantages to living near where you grew up.

At the same time, if I could move about 5 or 6 of my closest friends with me to a place that doesn't suck as bad as Houston, then it might be worth it for a change in scenery. We'll buy up a block of buildings in Denver and make a little tiny Louisiana ethnic enclave with a cajun butcher shop, daquerie sports bar, and a music venue.

No. Your advantages simply boil down to "it's easier and I'm comfortable in my little bubble."

There's nothing wrong with that until you act like baton rouge is tangibly better than a place like Houston or say stuff like this:

quote:

place that doesn't suck as bad as Houston

When you've already said Houston is just like baton rouge.

This must be one of those weekly I hate Louisiana threads...I'm not shocked.

I moved home to Baton Rouge after retiring from the Air Force in 2013 to be close to friends and family. Baton Rouge, or Louisiana for that matter, isn't as bad as the OT makes it out to be. Any place is what you make of it and I plan on making the best of where I live and work.
