I found out after I renovated my house. The new fan is operated by a remote which has a reverse button which to me was crazy. The electrician explained what it did.

It makes a huge difference.

Are you trying to get to "Counterclockwise when looking down at it", or up at it? Please be specific. It matters.

If the high edge of the blade is in the lead, when spinning, the wind will blow down. If the low edge is in the lead, when spinning, it will suck the air up and push it toward the walls, then down.

Only a nerd would know that.

I never switch mine because I never have needed to circulate my hot air in the winter.

I have mine the wrong way on purpose because I hate fans and my SO has no idea.

I would be willing to bet most people have them spinning the correct way now that it is hot since that’s the default when buying them. In the winter, it’s probably a different story as few people will switch it for the updraft (even ones who know better).

That’s actually a really good point and I didn’t think about it. You’re right. Delete this shite

I was hitting the bottle last night, my bad

Which nerds actually use their fan in the winter and bother to flip the switch?

Umm… me??

It could be 35 degrees outside and I’m still gonna have the fans on with the indies open

The fan's counterclockwise or my counterclockwise?

Remember to dust the blades before switching the direction. That dust collection will fly everywhere.

Sleep with it on high year round and always counterclockwise. No need for flipping a ceiling fan to reverse in Houston.

We have a fan in center of a living room and furniture along the walls. It's much cooler in summer keeping it on the Winter direction(updraft) because it creates good air flow down along the walls.

I would not have a cheap arse reversible fan about the place...I buy the good ones which have remote control of the blade angle....reversing ceiling fans are for the poors...

Depends on if you're looking at the fan from underneath or if you have some kind of vaulted ceiling and you're looking at it from the top which is opposite. Looking at it from underneath it's supposed to be going counterclockwise....it's going clockwise if you're looking from the top!

I agree that most nerds never touch the damn thing. You buy a house, renovate, and then you've got a handyman that can come by and attend to minor electrical issues. But eventually that guy succumbs to Meth and falls off the face of the Earth.

I was outside smoking a blunt at work and someone left a note with this same exact question.

I've never in my life known someone to actually take the time to change the direction of their fan seasonally. I'm sure it makes a difference, but it can't be that drastic with central heating/cooling, right?
