Everywhere in Lafayette charges 4% to use a card. Defeats the purpose of your 2% cash back bonus. It’s total bullshite. The damn marine shop charged me 4% the other day. What am I supposed to do, bring $500 cash with me?

That’s simply not true.

This week in suburban ATL I used my debit card for the first time in years because of a 2.5% upcharge for credit cards for a pricey auto repair. The math made sense for me to use my debit card. It's a thing.

34. Got my first credit card 18 months ago in case of emergencies (debit card got hacked twice) and pay it off monthly. Always lived by saving and don't spend money you don't have. Most of my friends have 3-6 credit cards and are close if not maxed out on them. No thanks on 24% interest but I'm sure I'll end up supporting them somehow

That goes both ways though. If I make a $5000 purchase on a credit card, pay off $4000 of it before 30 days, carry the remainder of $1000 a couple weeks before paying it off with the next paycheck, sure I'm paying interest on $1000 but not "20% on every purchase". In the case of a 20% APR, 1.66% interest is being paid on $1000 for carrying it a month. Or about $16. Not 20% on $5000, which would be $1000.

That is a very specific use case. And if everyone used their cards exactly like this, we wouldn’t have $1.13 trillion in cc debt as a nation.

But we do.

I didn’t say people are paying 20% on every purchase. I’m actually willing to take you personally at your word. What I am saying is if a hundred people told me that this is how they use their cards, most of them would be wrong or lying. That’s not fake news. That’s a mathematical certainty.

It’s absolutely less secure because it can allow for direct access to your bank accounts so you’re more exposed.

The use of cash and credit cards offers more security because it’s detached and not linked to your bank.

It’s not really arguable.

All the cash apps and Facebook pay shite makes me extremely uneasy. I've actually been considering opening a separate checking account with a minimum balance in it for stuff like that. Worst case scenario, I may lose $500 if I get got. Not like having my main account exposed.

My wife thinks I'm paranoid, though.

I had an auto repair shop charge a 3.5% fee for credit cards too. I've seen it at mom and pop restaurants as well. It's more common now than 5+ years ago.

Plenty of gas stations in LA have a cash and credit price.

The guy you were responding to did, and you were agreeing with him in your post, so I found it more convenient to respond to you.

Yes, this is becoming more and more common it seems unfortunately, mostly for small businesses. Can’t really blame them. Visa over there just sucking down a percentage on every transaction across the planet like a little tick. It’s messing up my flow though.

I tried to finance a new HVAC. They said I don't have any credit history.

I've definitely seen it, and I usually do the same. However, 99% of the time, there is no upcharge. I don't hate it if a store does pass their cc fee onto me. I get it, it's a convenience, and small businesses struggle enough as it is.

You think paying interest on shite you buy is a flex?

I use credit cards for 90% of my purchases and have never once paid a single cent in interest.

Probably the same crew that thinks they’re getting a better deal if they tell a car salesman they’re paying in cash.

My debit card is visa branded and can be run as credit..what additional protections would I get using a plain credit card?
If someone gets your credit card info they can't clear out your checking account. With debit card info that is a possibility.

ETA: Before people started stealing the info with scanners, I had all of my bills set up with monthly charges to my Debit card. Now I only use it to withdraw money from my bank's ATM's.

Oh, yeah, another major win for using a credit card. Build your credit and pay less interest on every single other loan you may need to take out in your life. On a company trip I watched my superiors use cash and debit cards the entire time and lost respect for them. If you’re using a debit card you’re stupid and ugly

I FAFO'd the same in college and right out of college. And the worst part is I was taught better. I wasn't financially ignorant, I was financially irresponsible. As Dave Ramsey says, I paid my "Stupid Tax". It took years into adulthood to get back into financial stability.

One barbecue place here in Ruston does that. I doubt it has hurt their business.

That’s a stupid reason. If you’re paying off you statement balance each month you are building points, which is basically free cash for trips or other purchases.
