Saw an ad on here advertising professional photography lenses and other accessories for your smartphone. Is that really a thing for photographers?

You can get some really good looking photos using just your smart phones these days.

Cue photo snobs saying that composition and lighting are more important than equipment.

They are mostly right but I still would be pissed if a pro showed up to my wedding with his cell phone.

If I’m paying you to take pictures and you pull out a cell phone to take the pics, you might not get paid.

Photographers use cells especially when they don't want to stand out by carrying a bag full of equipment. A phone camera allows them to take pics more anonymously.

FIFY. When exactly does a pro photographer list "not standing out" as the deciding factor?

I'm not familiar with any photographer who uses a cell phone as a primary device, save for a couple who've sought to do so for the unique-factor.

I'm sure some have used one in a pinch and that pros take cell phone photos like any other person (and that their photos are of higher quality). I know some pros have made books out of only cell phone photos just to show it can be done well.

Street photographers are concerned with this, but I've never heard of any of them intentionally using their cell phone as their main camera for that reason.

I have heard people talk about the x100 line from Fuji and small high-end point and shoots as good for street photography because they more easily blend into the surroundings.

My sister uses her phone maybe half of the time. When she has to take pics for the newspaper, a magazine, or something professional, she uses one of her big cameras. I think because it is easier to edit high resolution photos.

It's all about the photoshop jobs bruh

My sister has taken photos of protests. If she doesn't have any type of bodyguard or whatever, she will sometimes use her phone so as not to stand out

Not actual photographers that know what they're doing and trying to take a serious photo.

Everybody uses their cell phones if that's all they happen to have with them.

You are heavily limited on a technical level on what you can do with a smart phone.

How ever, as long as you aren’t planning on blowing the photo up, the quality is there with modern smartphones.

The big benefit is the fact that it’s always there and handy.

Hell, when I am out for a generic shoot, I find I often resort to a kit lens even if I own a prime that would work perfectly due to difficulty of set up.

I reserve my primes for speciality/low light applications where I need shutter speed. Or if I need the bokeh.

You’ll hear even expert photographers say it’s not the equipment that matters. It’s having the vision and taking advantage of the opportunity.

And the convenience of phones suits the last one.

Now if you have a Facebook “photographer” bringing his camera to a portrait session you have problems

I second this. Was at a calendar shoot yesterday and the cell phone was used with a lens for certain shots.

Wedding photographers are a racket.

Really everything involved with weddings is a racket.

You should see the shots I get with this thing. Just whip it out of my pocket and no one's the wiser.

But it’s true though.

You get treated differently in public by pretty much everyone if you are toting a big camera.

Even if you are going to the essentials with just one lens and a strap.

Apple sells photo accessories for your smartphone. I don't know much about photography, but it seems like the accessories they sell does produce a much better quality picture so I am sure there are people who do it, but I really don't know.

I do know, that people have showed me this dumb bitch on FB who is a "professional" photographer. And its obvious that she uses some shitty photo editing program and the pictures are not good at all.. But because she is really cheap, people who don't have much money hire her to do weddings and graduation pictures and it's kind of sad.

Phones do well with land scapes and with lowlight indoors. They aren’t great at portraits or action shots.

When a phone can get the zoom and bokeh of my 70-200 2.8L lens with the pixel quality of my full frame camera, 1/8000 shutter speed for sports, wider than 24mm (on 35mm sensor) for landscapes and architecture, then I'll think about using a phone for photos.
