Exactly. I'm trying to recall seeing a single pro taking pics with a cell phone from the concourse or by the dugouts at LSU games. It's a helluva lot more than just a how many fps their cell phone can take with action shots.

No cell phone is taking this picture from the same distance.

Show off.

And I was impressed with my camera being able to stop a bee’s wings if you are lucky to get the timing right (at the extremes of the flap) with 1/4000.

Well let’s be fair.

Sports shooting is not the benchmark of photography. If you are looking at doing a generic wide angle shot with no bokeh, a phone can do it.

Those guys you see on the sidelines are often sporting 20k dollar lenses in order to have the zoom and the fast shutter in low light

Right. But the benchmark for the OT is to be able to capture our little shite biscuits in mid air of a cheer or dance routine or hitting a baseball.

We ain't trying to be frickin Ansel Adams.

TLDR average Joe Dad will take 100% better pics of his kid with a $400 Dslr than his $1000 iPhone X(with some practice abd attempting to learn).

When a phone can get the zoom and bokeh of my 70-200 2.8L lens with the pixel quality of my full frame camera, 1/8000 shutter speed for sports, wider than 24mm (on 35mm sensor) for landscapes and architecture, then I'll think about using a phone for photos.

I know huh

Note how sharp the guy is mid back flip, and the bouncing ping pong balls are.

Both shot with a iPhone 8 Plus.

Not even an X, which has a much improved camera with multiple apertures.

Which isn’t even the definitive leader of phone cameras.

I’m not saying these supplant DSLRs.

You physically can’t get around the limitations of full frame sensor vs mm wide sensors.

But to act that you can’t take good shots with them at all is just snobbery. Minus a required zoom or blowing it up, they can compete with DSLRs. I wouldn’t spend much in the way of attachments however, because in my view the main asset of a camera phone is accessibility.

Can you simulate a ~400-1000mm focal length with a 2.0 aperture to give you a razor thin depth of field on the shot you provided?

Probably not. Especially not with a lot of time in post.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t take awesome shots with them in day to day usage.

There was a clause in my post.

You can NOT get those pictures with a cell phone at the same distance.
I'm not a professional, just a prosumer who has been at the back of dark auditoriums 50 feet from the stage for Nutcracker performances waiting for my clumsy dancer to come out for 8.4 seconds.
You will fail with a cell phone in that condition every time.

You will also fail at night, 50-100ft from your son/daughter swinging at a pitch.

Your examples are staged action and very close.

Bdeck definitely expressed hints of aforementioned snobbery.

I'm just going to add that I love my DSLR with a 70-200mm lens and use it whenever I can but I've taken perfectly fine pictures with my Galaxy S7 that were worthy of printing.

Cell phone cameras have come a long, long way.

MSN

You can sell camera photos. You just have know the camera’s limits and use it to accentuate the gear you’re carrying. The link above is a iPhone Instagram.
