How long before boarding a flight do you feel compelled to stand in line?

Flying to Spain, flight leaves in a hour, there are currently 20 something people standing in line. (6 in group 2)
It's assigned seating, on a non-full flight, but regardless if it were full or not, I'm puzzled by people's need to fight to board first.
I was in Mexico 2 months ago, and on the flight back to the US, 5 mins before boarding, no one was in line. The line only started forming after they announced that people can start boarding.
Am I missing something, do they give a free t-shirt or something to the first 100 people or something? Also, is this an attribute of a certain type of people?

Line?
I park right next to the jet and just walk on.

You're about to fly across the pond seated the whole time. I would be standing as much as possible.

the only reason is if you have a carryon bag and don't want to end up being forced to either check it or have it placed 20 rows behind you (which makes leaving a much bigger PITA than waiting early prior to boarding)

I’m usually at the bar until they call for final boarding. Never saw the point of herding myself into the gate area/line.

I don't stand in line. I wait a few minutes after the line is gone before heading to board.

If I have no carry on bags, I board at the last possible moment. If I have a carry on, I get in line to make sure I can put my bag where I can get to it without having to delay deplaning for myself.

I personally have never had an issue with carry ons. Of course I don't have 20 bags of shite I'm trying to bring with me either. There's always some space either above or to the side of me.

I check in and immediately go stand in line for my reserved seats, regardless of zone.
They're not the boss of me!!

If you fly a lot this is absolutely 100% the correct answer.

It's all about getting on before all the carry-on space is gone. Having to gate check your bag sucks.
If I don't have a carry-on (e.g., day trip), then my goal is to be the last person on.

I love flying in cities other than Atlanta (home airport) where orderly lining up is more common.
If you're flying internationally in anything but economy it usually doesn't matter. If you are in economy, it's still better because you have more bin space. But I will say if you have to put your bag in a weird spot it's annoying and it takes up time retrieving it when you want to be outhustling the hordes to passport control.

how often do you fly where you think you can bring "20 bags of shite" on the actual plane?

But the line is for group 1 &2 when there are like 5 groups. I would understand if group 5 was standing in line for fear of not getting the last few spaces....but group 1 and 2 should be sleeping until their group is called, because there's a ton of space.

I haven't either that I recall. Perhaps it happened years ago when I flew more for work, but I can't recall a single time it has happened. I've definitely never had to gate check a bag.

This is it. If the flight isn't full, finding overhead bin space shouldn't be a problem.

Carry on, purse, 2 shopping bags, a fast food bag, diaper bag, etc... people should be charged for carry on, and make check in free

Gate lice, as their called, are the worst.
