I lived in lsu student worker housing without a/c for a couple summers in an old house. Had a big fan in attic. It was not pleasant. Had to use one of those plastic mattress covers because of the sweat. Shacked up with a fat chick who stayed in town for summer school a couple times a week

The sheer amount of time and effort it took to survive day-to-day is unimaginable to most people today.

It’s not an outlandish statement.

The 19th century would look largely familiar to people of today’s world.

People dressed relatively similar. People’s morals were similar. People behaved similarly. People had careers and jobs similar to today.

There were many, many, many people who lived pampered lives similar to now.

Most of us would be extremely successful during any period in history because of our intelligence and knowledge. Unless the ability to gain power and wealth without performing manual labor is somehow considered being a "wuss".

I'm sure it's been said, but Modern man is already a wuss.

The average man in America would tower over most men of previous ages. Before the agricultural revolution, the average height of Dutchmen was 5'3 or something. The average height of a Dutch male has increased by 8 inches since the Industrial Revolution. Worldwide the increase has been 4 inches or so in developed countries.

In a physical sense a modern man would be well-equipped, but wouldn't have the skills to really thrive in any pre-industrial society, even relatively advanced ones.

Any modern man that has been through SERE can survive a pretty far ways back. Survive and living an enjoyable peaceful life are two very different things though. Also depends where on planet you are talking. Mosquitos are a mother fricker

Bingo. There were few safety nets, you were on your own. People found their own way.

For me the game changer would be modern dental care.

Go tour an old fort or ship and see what they worked on teeth with back then, no thanks frick that I'll sleep in the woods and hunt with a spear but I'll pass on the medieval dental care.

Having to work on their win cars would be enough to send most back into the future.

None of the elementary, middle, or high schools I attended were air conditioned. I graduated in 1977. The schools in the parish where I graduated didn't get AC until the parish planned a jail with AC. The voters wouldn't give them the jail until they put AC in the schools.
