I take off when I need to take off. If it’s going to be longer then a week, I coordinate with my boss and other providers in my cohort to meet with my clients if needed during that time. My time off is unpaid but I make enough to put back to cover any time lost from taking off without issue.

My previous job (in education) there was a ton of restrictive bullshite about when/where you could take days. And you were shamed for taking those days.

Typically, I never put any limits on vacation requests as long as you can ensure adequate coverage and your work is up to date.

You should have enough employees to cover appropriately though. There’s nothing worse than a boss who thinks they a) shouldn’t ever have to cover anything and b) never employs enough people to actually cover when folks need to take off.

Pretty much I have flexibility as long as I meet my deadlines which I pretty much know when I need to be in the office
And I don’t take off unless emergency on days when I’m expected to be there.
I’m not gonna leave a pile of work for someone else.
I’m at a point in my career where I don’t have to micromanage a lot of employees though so it makes my job easier

2 week notice... seniority doesnt matter

Emergencies happen and are granted... it's up to the employee to maintain their PTO

I have right of refusal, though I've used it sparingly and only on superfluous issues... I will make accommodations accordingly when that happens

Log in to our time management/payroll system, fill out a leave request, and then take the vacation.

I haven't had one denied yet.

I will occasionally do a call or zoom while away if it's something no one else can handle. Occasionally.

that's leadership's job...to assure staff coverage and manage PTO...

I don't think the seniority method works. Just because you have seniority doesn't entitle you to anything

Yeah that’s the most bullshite policy ever. Employee A has been here one year longer than employee B. Employee B requests time off a whole month in advance but employee A puts in a request last minute.

frick that

You’re an idiot. If vacation/leave is offered, it’s your responsibility as the manager to manage if the employees decide to use their benefit. It’s not their responsibility to ensure tom dick and harry aren’t also taking vacation at the same time.

I tell them I'm going on vacation and they ask "How long will you be gone?"

I say, "X days."

The end.

Ask for days off. Get approved 9/10 times because I always pick up extra when asked. Gotta play the game. Some that don’t want to offer additional coverage, get denied here and there.

Staff are basically auto approved unless they're assigned to a project during the time requested. If they are booked on something, the manager of the project will usually find a replacement and then approve. Very rarely it gets denied if the request is short notice and a replacement isn't available.

For managers I pretty much just blind approve unless it's a weird situation or they are taking it all at once. They figure out their workload/schedule.

We have to schedule PTO in the same online app that tracks our billable hours.

But my employer doesn’t have accrual or tracking of vacation days. There’s no cap.

If they are federal government, don't be surprised if they are making a lot more than that with great benefits. A GS-11 Step 10, typical mid level fderal employee (that requires no specialized degree, education, certification, etc.) makes almost $80k before OT, which many times is near unlimited.

That's the job of management, NOT the employee when requesting vacation time. My opinion anyway.

When I put in for time 2 months or more in advance I'm not asking...I'm letting you know I won't be there.
