Been in management for years and only had one real place where my policy did not work. I managed 15 women in government job and all they did was fight with each other. So one step above McDonalds. They would not work or talk to each other.

Typically, I never put any limits on vacation requests as long as you can ensure adequate coverage and your work is up to date.

I think it's the employees responsibility to ensure their work is current and they have a back up available. They're supposed to be professionals. We must ensure coverage.

It would also help me see who could work and negotiate with others when it came to conflicts.

I don't think the seniority method works. Just because you have seniority doesn't entitle you to anything.

I tell them when I’m not coming in and they says “ok sounds good”.

We have no tracking system. Pretty much just the honor system and do your job, like an adult.

We have a formal request system in ADP that no one uses.

People just create an event in their calendar named “NAME - OOO” and invite anyone that might need to know.

It’s unlimited PTO and no approvals.

No, they're not. They're government workers making 50k. stop expecting them to act like lawyers trying to make partner.

Well you are wrong.

If an employee tells you with reasonable notice that they are not going to be at work then management needs to ensure there is coverage. Management also needs to ensure that there is coverage for sick employees and employee emergencies.

It is 100% managements responsibility to ensure coverage and if you are pawning that off on to your employees then you are a bad manager.

LOL so in your opinion, only professional degrees require people to act professional. The rest are business baboons you corral with a gaff?

I allow everyone in our company to have as much time off as they need, provided their area is covered adequately. I will also go and cover for them on occasion, like this Saturday. That shows I care about their needs and lets me see how operations are running.

The employees love it. We have 120 employees and the average tenure is 21 years.

You exist to manage your team. If you want them to figure out vacation coverage it sounds like you want them to manage it.

Man you government workers are lazy sacks of shite.

Nah. I think there is certainly approval, but you have to push employees to take personal ownership and responsibility. Bad management is having to micromanage every action by your employees.

Letting them manage simple vacation requests but ensuring continuity/coverage is management's responsibility. The only time that is affected is holidays. Then it has to he managed.

It's quite literally your job as a manager to make sure the work gets done. If you think it's a good idea that everyone takes a vacation at the same time or different times it's on you.

It's also on you to make sure their work is getting done.
